Our new Horatio’s Garden in Belfast, Northern Ireland is now complete and the spring bulbs are beginning to work their magic. Many of the patients and their families and friends will be here for many weeks, if not months, so we have worked hard to ensure that the planting changes with the seasons so that every day feels different in the garden and that there is always plenty that is new to enjoy. We believe that Biophilic design – or bringing people up close with nature and natural materials is essential for healing spaces.  From the cedar in the pergola and pavilion to the clay water chu ..read more

These massive Yorkshire stone boulders will be part of the Mediterranean Garden that has been designed for the walled garden at Beningbrough in North Yorkshire.   We were on site to see that work is progressing well with the walls ready to clad in locally sourced York stone and the pool base is in place. This part of the garden was most recently laid out to lawns, but now it will become a place to wander among Mediterranean plants while listening to the gentle sound of water. Andy’s design has created views and cosy corners for visitors to enjoy, while there is plenty of new seating and ..read more

Planting at the highest house in the south east

High up in the South Downs, we are creating a garden for a new eco home. This site is the most exposed we’ve ever worked on. You only have to look at the landscape here and you instantly see how it is ravaged by the strong winds that can rip across the hills. So our garden is hunkered down behind flint walls in terraces that have been carved into the chalk hills.     We have just planted the prairie garden avoiding any taller grasses or perennials that might fall victim to the wind, but this is experimental for us and we will see how our plants progress. Our trees are Crataegus – hi ..read more

Isle of Wight Garden completed: 2019 client: private photography: Rachel Warne The site, with a north facing 1:3 slope, was a place for goats not people. Inaccessible and unusable the house sat at one end of the plot with a steep, isolated grass bank at the other. An empty island amongst the neighbouring buildings, this lawned desert lacked interest and biodiversity and was completely exposed to the weather, to neighbours and to passersby. The adjacent grade II listed church loomed over the garden and was such a powerful presence that it completely dominated the place. I wanted to make a gard ..read more
