When Kate set about designing her 2017 entry for the Chelsea Flower Show she was very keen to include light transmitting materials into the hard landscaping. After considering the quotes received for light transmitting concrete for the large wall that Kate had envisaged the team realised, they were going to have to get creative. The wall was going to be an integral part of the garden they had to find a way. In 2017 Kate and her team built her garden ‘City Living’ an imagined urban apartment block where Kate demonstrated how it was possible to green various overlooked spaces which a ..read more

This week’s ode to the Chelsea Flower Show comes in shape of Kate thinking back on her 2014 garden with Alan Titchmarsh. Kate chats about the build, every Chelsea garden build is as memorable as the finished article, they each seem to have their own personality largely depending on the weather and who was helping to build on site. Kate also shares some of the lessons that this garden taught her and some take away tips for gardeners at home. This year’s garden was a little different to those of previous years. I was delighted to be asked by the RHS to work with Alan Titchmarsh to design ..read more

The month of May for those who work in the horticultural industry is always about The RHS Chelsea Flower Show; whether you are designing and building a garden or simply there to support friends and colleagues who are, it is inconceivable that Chelsea would not happen.  It might rain, hail or sleet its way through May but Chelsea would always somehow magic its way to completion, even if it was occasionally just in the nick of time.  This year is very different and without Chelsea’s physical presence on the grounds of The Royal Hospital in London we became a bit nostalgic to our gard ..read more

A Beautiful Spring Garden- Lessons From Ascot 2018

Ascot Spring Garden Show 2018 – A Garden For All Seasons The spring of 2018 was horribly cold and wet.  Not exactly the ideal conditions for building any garden, let alone a show garden where even the tiniest scrap of dirt will manage to adhere itself to every available surface that you absolutely do not want it to touch.  We dug through concrete in heavy rain and sleet, footings filled with water, refusing to drain and although concrete will set under water it is not really an ideal situation, in any reality.  The sun steadfastly refus ..read more

When the tough gets going, do the tough start growing?  In the case of gardeners, yes.  100% categorically, yes. Covid-19 has coincided with a thankful lull (well, looking on the bright side there has to be some good news to be pleased for at the moment) in the 5th wettest winter in the UK since records began but more importantly, it has coincided with the start of the growing season.  Spring is the season when gardeners are at their most manically busy; getting the garden up and running after any winter is always a huge task but gettin ..read more

Urban Garden Design Makes Top Books List for 2019
Kate Gould Gardens
by Bronwynne Britt

2019 was a year of ‘firsts’ for Kate. Climbing a decidedly large mountain for charity, building her first Main Avenue show garden at Chelsea and definitely not least of all, publishing her very first book on garden design.  Over a period of 12 months Kate worked alongside Kyle Books and photographer Helen Fickling to create the final edit of Urban Garden Design. Kate knew from the get-go that she didn’t just want to create a beautiful book with inspirational images, it had to be balanced out with equal proportions of practical design advice, advice that could b ..read more

Another Chelsea has drawn to its inevitable close and we are delighted to share the pictures of our Greenfingers Charity garden with you all. The build was an exhausting one but we were proud of the final result. The team all did an amazing job and if we collapsed in an exhausted heap after judging then we would all probably blame it on the lift! Designing a garden at Chelsea is truly like no other experience in the world and this garden was particularly close to Kate and the team’s heart as it was designed and built for a wonderful charity that really does mak ..read more
