Formidable Stairs – 2.5 Years Post TKR

It has been 2.5 years since my tkr. Stairs still cause concerns. I thought I’d share a story in case this has happened to anyone else. I don’t do more than 3-5 stairs at a time, usually. Then, last week I needed to climb up and down 20 stairs. I did it twice during the day. When I got home…yikes. I was exceptionally drained. I hadn’t been that overall tired in ages. My tkr knee was very stiff. Making dinner was an effort. So, I layed on the sofa and watched television. My tkr knee was starting to hurt. It appeared swollen on the outer side portion. The nerve damage from my previous (now extinc ..read more

It’s been 2.5 years since my tkr and I wanted to share my scar appearance. Luckily, I can state it looks great. I feel very blessed and grateful for that since I know of other tkr patients who cannot say the same thing. Here’s the breakdown: 8” of my scar looks like a fine white line. The upper 2” portion (above my knee) is a little wider and discolored. However, the coloring is a muted purple. It’s no big deal. Hope this helps others going through the same thing. Find interesting? Kindly share…. The post TKR Scar Update appeared first on Booktoots' Healing ..read more

Stationary Bike V Walking After TKR
Booktoots' Healing

I have written previous posts about the benefits of both walking and using a stationary bike after having a tkr. However, within the past month something has occurred that is quite interesting to me. So…I thought I’d share insight into stationary bike versus walking after a tkr.. Walking is fun. You can talk to other people, pet the walking dogs and enjoy the scenery. Kudos for walking. Plus, it both increases our tkr flexibility and muscle strength. Stationary bikes, on the other hand, are not much fun. I don’t care how much I read about how you can watch tv, enjoy music, etc. while riding a ..read more

Benefits of Early Morning Walks & TKR
Booktoots' Healing

Part of recuperating from a tkr involves learning how to walk again. We start out slow to gradually retrain our muscles and build up our strength. Sometimes, it is downright tiring. However..it is worth it. Here are some of the benefits of going for an early morning walk. At least they work for me, so Iâ€m hoping they work for you as well… Hear the chirping birds communicating with each other. See the deer out for their early morning stroll. Watch the deer graze on the neighborâ€s rose bushes. (Thatâ€s especially entertaining..:) ) Finally see the elusive neighborhood pheasant. All last year ..read more

I’ve been so caught up in the 2010 Olympics lately, I haven’t posted on here about my tkr lately. Hope others have had a chance to catch the Olympics. It has been fantastically entertaining and inspiring. And….Team Canada just brought home the Gold Medal in Men’s Hockey!! The game went into OT. What a FANTASTIC game and tournament!!! Tonight is the 2010 Olympic closing ceremony. Anyways… I was recently asked about my tkr clicking and whether it still happens. It does not do that anymore. My clicking happened for a short time awhile back. I wrote a blog post about it then. The episode only last ..read more

Why My TKR Recuperation May Be Different than Yours

My readers are great. Thank you!! I just received an email from one of my favorite long-time contributors. We’ve been communicating for so long, I consider her one of my online friends. She reminded me that I need to mention my individual situation as it relates to my tkr recuperation. Maybe by doing that, others can relate better. So… Shoe lift. I wear an inch, external shoe lift. After my car accident, my femurs (thighbones) are different lengths. This has caused scoliosis, which is another article. Wearing a shoe lift has also caused my knee to not have average flexibility. (This means I h ..read more

Eight Year Post-TKR Update
Booktoots' Healing

Hi everyone. Has it already been eight years since my total knee replacement, otherwise known as a tkr? You bet it has. February 2008 was when I had this surgery. So..it is time for my eight year post-tkr update. KNEE FLEXIBILITY. My knee flexibility is still around 90-93. It is due to previous scar tissue dating back 30 years. The degree is about what it was prior to my tkr. I have written about this in numerous posts throughout my site. It is of no concern to me. LIMITED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Due to the hindered flexibility, I am unable to ride a typical bicycle. Or, let me say that I can do it ..read more

How To Extend The Life Of A Swimsuit

Hi everyone! As many of you know, I am an avid supporter of swimming and water aerobics. It is the ideal way to get exercise without putting much pressure on the joints. Granted, it is not for those fresh out of a total knee replacement, or tkr. Down the road, however, it provides many benefits. The cost of swimsuits can seem rather high. The more costlier, the longer the suit lasts. A quality, higher-priced suit can contain chlorine resistant components that extend the suit’s useful life. It can be made out of more durable materials. Whatever the reason, a good suit is worth the investment. T ..read more

How To Turn Car Washing into TKR Exercise

Washing your own car not only saves money, but can provide an all-body workout. Just try washing your own by hand and tell me it’s not a good cardio workout. And, there are ways to improvise to get more tkr (total knee replacement) exercise. Try these… While stretching and reaching to wash the roof and hood area of your car, gently straighten your tkr leg. This helps stretch out your entire back and leg area. While bending down to wash the lower parts of your car, gently straighten your knee until you feel a mild stretch along the backside of your knee. There, you’re stretching your hamstring ..read more

Booktoots' Healing

Hi everyone. Anyone who regularly visits this site knows that I firmly believe in natural remedies as much as possible. After having recent bouts of extreme nerve pain caused by previous bone spurs, I needed to find new ways to reduce pain without prescription drugs. Three ways to decrease tkr pain.. The neuropathy is located on the left side of my tkr. (I had to fit in tkr so the search engines love it…:) ) Here’s the scoop….. 1) Mattress rotation. It turns out one night I noticed that when laying flat on my back, my hip bones were uneven. My right one was about 1/2” higher than my left on ..read more
