EFColor Low Temp Enamel Tutorial

After weeks and weeks of fun days in the studio exploring the wonders of EFColor Low Temp Enamels I decided it would be a great idea to create a tutorial.  Combining EFColor and polymer clay seems like a match made in heaven, and I have to tell you, it is. EFColor powders stick really well to raw clay.  They also cure beautifully on a cured clay component.  There are actually lots of different options but I chose a few simple ones to concentrate on in the tutorial and I love how it turned out. What are EFColor Low Temp Enamels? If you read my last blog post you would know EFC ..read more

EFColor Enamel and Polymer Clay
Debbie Crothers

For the last 12 months or so I’ve  been exploring and experimenting with EFColor low temp enamels and polymer clay.  This has been a really exciting journey for me and I know I still have much more to learn about this product. What is EFColor Low Temp Enamel? EFColor Low Temp Enamel is actually a powdered resin and cures to a solid, glossy state when popped into an oven at 150 celcius for 3 to 5 minutes.  I use my benchtop oven to cure EFcolor but there are other ways it can be cured.  A heat gun works well but there is a learning curve to that process and there is still ..read more

Mixed Media Found Objects Statement Necklace
Debbie Crothers
by Debbie Crothers

I love creating large, mixed media art jewellery necklaces! Incorporating found objects, broken jewellery, fabric, feathers, beads is incredibly exciting (yep, if you know my work you know I love this stuff). In 2021 the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery hosted the Midwest Art Prize.  This is a pretty big deal for our area and often attracts hundreds of entries. I decided to enter! My original concept was to incorporate broken jewellery items, found objects etc into a large, wall art piece.  It was easy enough to set out on my work table but to actually construct the thing was a night ..read more

Polymer Clay Mixed Media Earrings
Debbie Crothers

You know I’ve often said over the years, “I don’t normally make earrings”! I was completely wrong!!  I have made heaps of earrings over the years and I have to say my favourites would have to be the ones incorporating mixed media. Mixed media to me conjured all sorts of luscious images – I think of feathers, wire, beads, fabric – all the good stuff.  It kinda makes sense to include all this good stuff in a pair of earrings. Of course there are many pairs I’ve created which are pure polymer clay which I love just as much but the whole mixed media vibe really excites me. I thought I wo ..read more

Combining Polymer Clay and Tassels
Debbie Crothers

There’s something I’ve always loved about tassels…something quite magical. The combination of beads, fabric, feathers, wire etc is pure heaven for me – a mixed media delight – and they can be incredibly simple to make. They are unique, versatile and look amazing combined with polymer clay components. I often go through stages of incorporating tassels into my work but recently delved even further and created quite a range. Why not try simply crimping some feathers into a cord end and hang for some truly unique earrings.  Add some fabric and you have a completely different look.  I ..read more

Curtain Ring Mixed Media Christmas Wreaths
Debbie Crothers

These little Christmas Wreaths are just the cutest and they were so easy to make. I love that I was able to use found objects which kept the cost to a minimum and made them original and unique.  Even though some of the found objects really weren’t Christmassy, I think they have a bit of a festive feel to them. To be honest, they don’t have to be Christmas inspired.  They can simply be turned into mobiles to hang around the house, in a tree, on a curtain rod etc. The wooden curtain ring was covered with mesh fabric and secured in place with hot glue.  Found objects were glued on ..read more

My Polymer Clay Story
Debbie Crothers
by Debbie Crothers

Let me tell you a little about my polymer clay story. Let’s start at the beginning…. My polymer journey started a long time ago and I fell head over heals from the moment I touched this medium.  I joined an Aussie forum and was probably the pesky “new kid on the block” asking all the questions in all the wrong ways.  I was like a sponge and wanted to soak up every bit of information I could find.  I learnt very early on, etiquette around “being inspired” by”, the no-no’s of copying and the right way to ask questions. I was always sure to give credit where credit was due (ie if I ..read more

Inspiration: Polymer Clay “Frida” Inspired Earrings
Debbie Crothers
by Debbie Crothers

I just wanted to share some of the “Frida” inspired earrings I’ve been making recently – which have been sooooo addictive by the way. I had previously incorporated some of my little flowers into beautiful mini bud vases and ring dishes and also combined them with floral pebbles/cabochons.  If you’re reading this you’re on the website now so check out my tutorials page to find instruction on how to make them. The flowers are divine – I loooooove making them and when I showed them to a friend. she suggested I incorporate some into very large funky “Frida” inspired art earrings.  Chal ..read more

Living in My Polymer Bubble with Debbie Crothers

I’ve told this story briefly before but I was limited with how long it could be so I had to think very carefully about what parts of the story were the most important.  The good thing about doing a blog post is….I can tell the whole lot here and it makes no difference to anyone! Let’s start at the beginning…. My polymer journey started a long time ago and I fell head over heals from the moment I touched this medium.  I joined an Aussie forum and was probably the pesky “new kid on the block” asking all the questions in all the wrong ways.  I was like a sponge and wanted to soak u ..read more

Product Review: Lucy Struncova Texture Stamps with Polymer Clay
Debbie Crothers
by Debbie Crothers

Yay!! it’s finally time to sit with my Lucy Struncova texture stamps and play with some polymer clay processes.  I’ve had these stamps for a couple of years now (huge thanks Lucy) and have pulled them out every now and then to work with but treated them like any other texture stamp and jumped in way too quick!!  I couldn’t quite get them to do what I wanted them to. I guess I was frustrated with myself for not being able to use a product which is seemingly, very simple to use! Time to Start Fresh I had a few free days in the studio so decided it was time to start fresh with these sta ..read more
