How I made a 12th scale eggbox

I was lucky enough to be gifted a 3D resin printer for my Birthday last year. This was primarily to help me design and make 12th scale handles for the furniture I make that are near impossible to buy.  It soon became apparent that the realms of possibility for my miniature making had opened up a hundred fold. I'm not a sculptor so 3D printing allowed me to design and make organic forms with a degree of accuracy. But fear not dear reader. If you want to make an eggbox, you don't need a 3D printer. Some of the most mundane, but essential household items seem to take a huge amount of effort to make. I'd been scouring the internet for a long time trying to work out how to make those colourful, transparent toothbrushes. The answer is surprisingly simple but long winded. I touched on this technique in a previous post but this is a more detailed approach. This is how I make them and not, necessarily, the best way to make them. If, like me, you intend to make a lot of these brushes, the initial outlay for UV resin, a UV nail lamp, UV resin dye and silicone mold may not seem so onerous. S ..read more

The lockdown over the last three months has prevented me buying any new materials. Most of the companies I use were closed altogether, some provided mail order but I felt uneasy burdening an already busy Royal Mail with 'non critical' deliveries. It occured to me that I don't utilise readily available materials around the house as much as I could. I have a pretty good printer/scanner and an abundance of full scale food packaging that I could scale down for use in miniature. Anything bigger than my A4 scanner bed proved a pain; cutting the packaging up, scanning and then restitching it in desig ..read more

For the last couple of weeks, I've dedicated some time to my life-size garden. It's something I've neglected in favour of miniature making and an area that really needed improving. Since my house faces North-East, the light is poor and prone to strong winds from the coast. I opted for fake lawn, (which looks amazingly realistic and has won many awards at the RHS Chelsea Show ), and a good dollop of advice from my neighbour who knows all there is to know about plants. The turf was removed just before I went on holiday. Almost four weeks of back-breaking work later I can't relax for long ..read more

I've done very little mini making over the last couple of weeks. But I thought I'd post a 'what I've been up to' before I head off to the US of A tomorrow. The Gothic Manor is inching at glacial pace towards being weather tight. I designed a pair of double doors which incorporate the same Gothic tracery that appears on other parts of the building, in the hope that it will bring it all together.  I can't decide how to finish them - paint, stain, weather them down. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! As you can see, the stonework is the same as it was last year. In true miniaturist fa ..read more
