Last week Walters & Cohen Architects were the proud recipients of a RIBA National Award for the Dorothy Garrod Building at Newnham College, Cambridge. Keeping Up Appearances

Talking to people can be exhausting, especially when combined with travel, late nights and the pressure of making good impressions. If I had a dollar for every time someone has asked me “Don’t you get exhausted from being around people all day?” my job would be done here. However, creating a successful business development strategy is a little more complicated than that. So I thought I’d share some of my secrets with you on how I (try) to keep up with the pace and avoid the alleged drain of it all. To get things started, I’ll share my biggest and possibly most important discovery thus far: Tip ..read more

Working closely with Walters & Cohen Architects and Ab Rogers Design we made sure the lighting for the new Dorothy Garrod Building at Newnham College was spot on. The lighting scheme creates a welcoming, warm feel, and includes a beautiful floating light sculpture over the café and bespoke brass pendants in the Porters’ Lodge. Find out more in May’s edition on FX magazine: The lighting scheme for the college’s contemporary extension has also been covered in Luxury Interiors Magazine. Good in Bed

How many times has the first thing you’ve said to someone in a day been “I’m so tired”? “I never get enough sleep”, “I wish I could wake up early”, “I need at least two cups of coffee to function”. Being busy, the paragon of success in our modern society, is at direct odds with all of the facts and figures that we constantly debate about sleep. (By the way, busyness is rubbish.) We know that humans need eight hours of sleep, and that all of us are in sleep debt. We know that exposure to blue light before bed has a negative impact on your ability to fall, and stay, asleep. We know that environm ..read more

Artificial light in nighttime photography

by Slaney Cullen

Nighttime photography is becoming increasingly popular, with millions of people gaining access to digital cameras and platforms to share their snaps on. Mobile phones now come equipped with digital cameras that can produce high-quality images in low light levels, and this has inspired a wave of obscure, contemporary photography that’s taking Instagram by storm. Many young creators are sharing their work through social media using hashtags to gain recognition; the idea of having your work viewed by thousands is encouraging amateur photographers to explore their cities and see the world in a dif ..read more

We all crave a good night’s sleep. And, when it comes to hotels, savvy operators want to give their guests exactly that. With lighting design playing an important role in achieving this, we’ve decided to make it the focus of our CPD at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. We’re inviting designers and operators of hotels to gain a better understanding of how lighting can help people get a good night’s sleep. Based on practical application and current research, this session will explore how the body’s natural rhythms are affected by light, the influence of environmental and physiological factors ..read more

An interview with Liz West

As part of my ongoing research on colour theory, I talk with artist Liz West about ways of seeing and creating, simplicity and distraction, and the generation of ideas. Let’s start with talking about the luminous surface. Can you describe your relationship with light and colour, and why it’s important to you? It’s so hard to answer that because it’s multifaceted. It’s many things, not just one singular thing. It’s about being a sensory person in a world that is super sensory. My most vivid memories of childhood are based on light and colour, not necessarily together but sometimes. These experi ..read more

MIPIM Virgin

So how was MIPIM, you ask? “Sorry, kid. Looks like you’re going to have to handle this on your own” was the verdict of our management meeting regarding the highly anticipated property investment conference a mere few weeks prior. Never been to MIPIM? Well, I hadn’t either. Nor had anyone from Nulty. And, naturally, as my (new-ish) role is dedicated to looking after the business development for the practice, it seemed only fitting it was the year to make our debut at “Le marché international des professionnels de l’immobilier”. Despite my lack of French, I’d heard quite a lot of buzz about this ..read more
