The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

Rating 7/10 Quintessentially British filmmaker Guy Ritchie can’t catch a break in his home country. None of his pictures have merited a theatrical release in the UK since 2020’s The Gentlemen. The fact that his last four works have all gone straight to streaming platforms is perplexing. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is set to follow suit on Amazon Prime. Meanwhile, across the pond here in the US, all of his flicks have graced a theater first. Lucky for us because his latest is a rollicking adventure just made for the big screen. This account is set against the backdrop of World War II ..read more

Wicked Little Letters
Fast Film Reviews

Rating 5/10 Wicked Little Letters unfolds in the picturesque setting of a seaside town post-World War I, a time and place that promises a captivating exploration of scandal and societal dynamics. The idyllic streets and the sea breeze add to the charm. Yet, what begins as an intellectual discourse on social norms devolves into hackneyed cliches. In 1920, Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) is a devout Christian who lives in Littlehampton, Sussex. One day, she begins receiving hate mail laced with a stream of obscenities. Her father (Timothy Spall) suspects Irish immigrant and single-mom neighbor Rose ..read more

The First Omen

Rating 4/10 The First Omen is the sixth installment in the horror franchise. Initially skeptical, but the siren call of favorable reviews enticed me. Alas, my risk did not yield a reward. This is yet another hackneyed horror entry that exploits religion to no effect. 1971 was a year marked by political strife and societal unrest in Italy. Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous year in Rome, the account introduces a young woman named Margaret. She has embraced a vocation of nunhood as her life’s calling. Guided by the mentorship of a Cardinal (Bill Nighy), Margaret’s journey leads her to an ..read more

Civil War
Fast Film Reviews

Rating 7/10 Director Alex Garland is a provocateur. His previous film, Men, clumsily blended horror elements with heavy-handed social commentary. Now, he’s back with Civil War, a movie that reflects on societal issues by thrusting us into the heart of a nation torn apart by civil strife. It specifically focuses on the human experience amidst unrest and the harsh reality of combat. Set in the not-too-distant future, the United States is embroiled in a rapidly escalating multiparty civil war. Nick Offerman briefly appears as the President, an authoritarian serving his third term. In a rare mome ..read more

I should think a more honest title for The Beautiful Game might have been Uplifting Sports Drama #562. Of course, that wouldn’t have been as catchy. A group of English footballers (soccer to those of us in the U.S.) embarks on a journey to compete in Rome at the prestigious Homeless World Cup. Expect to ..read more
