Tableau Community Spotlight: Revisiting the Flerlage Twins, Kevin and Ken

Hello Readers. Way back in 2018, I starting reading Tableau and Data Visualization posts (and humorous videos) from these two brothers, Kevin and Ken Flerlage. Both of them were very talented and funny. Kevin even posted a funny video with him dressed as an elf, and unknown to her, singing a Christmas song along with his wife who was in the shower. I consider Kevin and Ken good friends. They are the epitome of what the Tableau Community (and the #datafam) should be: selfless, kind, caring, sharing, always willing to help out their fellow “Tableauians.” No question was too much to ask or too be ..read more

Forty years ago today, on July 23rd, 1983, I ate the 72 oz Steak at The Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas. There have only been about 4,800 people (NOTE: See the latest stats below as of July 2023) who have ever been able to do this feat and I thought I would use today’s blog to tell you my personal story about this. After all, us data visualization folks need to be good storytellers too. I was living in College Station, Texas, home of Texas A&M University and working at the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL). By testing hundreds of specimens from around the worl ..read more

Historical Dataviz: Survivorship Bias and Getting the Data Wrong

Survivorship Bias Makes You a Poor Decision Maker During World War II, researchers at the Center for Naval Analysis faced a critical problem. Many bombers were getting shot down on runs over Germany. The naval researchers knew they needed hard data to solve this problem and went to work. After each mission, the bullet holes and damage from each bomber was painstakingly reviewed and recorded. The researchers poured over the data looking for vulnerabilities. The data began to show a clear pattern (see image below). Most damage was to the wings and body of the plane. First, I would like to thank Michael for giving me the opportunity to express my ideas on his blog. I have been following you for several years and your work is remarkable. After studying computer and design, I decided to focus my career on data processing in 2014. From 2015 to 2017, I joined different IT service companies to help clients on Digital Analytics topics. That’s when I discovered data visualization and Tableau. I immediately fell in love with data visualizati ..read more

Tableau Conference 2023 (TC23) is a little more than a week away. Like many of my fellow attendees, I will be passing out pins I made for the conference. I thought about what I wanted as a catchphrase and the theme of my pin for a while and decided to go with a riff on one of the catchphrases of one of my favorite childhood television shows, The Flintstones. Fred Flintstone, when he was happy or excited, would yell out “Yabba Dabba Doo!” Me, on the other hand, when I get a visualization to tell me the secrets of my data, I yell out “Yabba Dabba Data!” Fred Flintstone at TC30000BC Now, I have a ..read more

I hope you enjoyed Part 2 of this series where I discussed the Financial Times Graphic Continuum developed by Dr. Jon Schwabish and designer Severino Ribecca. Later, the Financial Times would develop the Visual Vocabulary poster inspired by the Graphic Continuum (I will discuss this in a little more detail in a minute). But the main focus of this post is to discuss how Andy Kriebel took the Visual Vocabulary poster and translated it into an interactive chart chooser tool using Tableau. Not only does this help expand chart literacy for visual developers, but each example Andy provides in the va ..read more

I hope you enjoyed Part 1 of this series where I discussed Dr. Andrew Abela’s Chart Suggestions-A Thought-Starter tool for choosing the best chart to visualize your data. As I described, you would select the best answer to a few questions, and then you would be able to determine the best chart(s) for your data visualization. Choosing the right chart for data visualization is key to providing a more immediate grasp by the viewer of what information the chart is trying to convey. This will help them gain quicker insight and make better actionable decisions. Almost five years ago, I blogged ..read more

Dr. Andrew Abela Choosing the right chart for data visualization is key to providing a more immediate grasp by the viewer of the chart along with them being able to gain insight quicker to make actionable decisions. It has been 10 years since I first blogged about how to choose the best chart for data visualization. Dr. Andrew Abela’s Chart Suggestions-A Thought-Starter was one of the first chart help guides I came across and it helped me immensely. Here is a link to my original post. Dr. Abela’s chart chooser is probably the best known one throughout the Data Visualization & Analytics wor ..read more
