For example, can I create a character named Superman, but have him be completely unrelated to the original comicbook character? Also, could I, for example, name a book Cobalt Heights, but there's already an apartment complex with the same name?

My nephew is a fan of old WWF matches on vhs. His favorite wrestler being Macho Man. I'd like to take a picture of Macho Man during a match and personalize it for him....the have Walgreens print it out as a poster. Is this legal? Would Walgreens even do it?

If I want to create a fictional character without risking copyright infringement, how far do I need to get from existing similar character?
For example:
Rocket Racoon (Marvel/Disney) - does it mean that nobody can create a talking racoon with a gun anymore?
Super-Turtle (DC Comics) - would that mean that nobody can create a turtle super hero with cape?
King Shark (Suicide Squad / DC Comics) - would creating a talking shark with hands and legs risk lawsuit from DC Comics / Warner Bros?
character bitten by spider that gets super powers (Spiderman/Marvel/Disney) - creating character with ..read more

I have a question about a tricky copyright question.
I recently built an app and webpage allowing users to set up a camera above a board game. The camera takes images of the game to figure out what point the game is in and such. Users can use the app to input what moves they have done (or will do).
What this system creates is a digital log of the entire board game. That log can be used in several ways: 1) creating a stats page at the end of the game, and 2) creating AI opponents that can instruct you where they want you to move their piece (think alpha or Deepblue). It allows users to play a ..read more

Ok so I'm making a world building series set in the modern day and I am wondering if it is copyright infringement to include modern day companies or businesses in the background of my scenes. I really want to try and be as accurate as possible to my locations so I also include the businesses and companies seen in the background.
Is this ok or do I have to go through the tedious and shitty task of removing all of that? Cause I really don't wanna make up companies and businesses and then translate their fictional names into Korean...

In capoeira( a Brazilian fighting sport ), half of the learning process is about musics, traditional instruments and songs we sing together around the fighters.
A lot of theses songs have always been sung and I'm pretty sure there is no copyright on them (how can I be sure though ?). But some of them have been written recently and may have copyright so can I only display the Lyrics without having the risk to be sued ?
Or what can I do to check the copyright of a song ?
I am from France and most of the songs come from brasil, does it changes anything ?
Thank you if you have even a slight insig ..read more

I am making a children’s picture book. My books artwork features artistic photography of miniature figurines I’ve made, in little sets I’ve designed myself. In one, I plan to make a book shelf filled with miniature books I read when I was a child as a set piece in the background. When I explained this to my friend, he told me to be careful as I could get sued, which I found hard to believe. Since this is a copyright subreddit, I wanted to ask just to be safe, as it would be a pain to have to fix things after they’ve been finished. Since they’re just sitting in the background as part of a set ..read more
