Powerlifting can be a phenomenal tool to increase strength. Which is why you see many people back squatting, bench pressing, and deadlifting to get stronger. However, there are different ways in which you may want to utilize these lifts depending on your goals. While a Powerlifter and a general athlete may both be using these lifts to get stronger they may be using them in different ways. At Force Barbell, our view is to train these two types of athletes differently. For Powerlifters, it is appropriate most of the time to squat, bench and deadlift in ways that are specific to the sport. For fi ..read more

Imagine 100 years ago, when people picked up huge bales of hay. Or Ancient Greece, when wrestler Milo of Croton started strength training by carrying a calf on his back every day until it was fully grown. In the midst of this carrying and lifting, did you ever think these people would say to themselves, “I really wish I had a lifting belt right now to help me lift this weight.” No, they probably never thought of something so strange. However, now that strength training has evolved and we now know that a lifting belt is necessary in certain situations, it needs to be discussed thought ..read more

How To Massively Increase Strength
Force Barbell | Powerlifting

How does a 135-lb. woman squat 400 lbs., one might ask? Steroids? Perhaps, but there’s still something deeper going on physiologically. Many people think that the bigger one is or the more muscular one is, the stronger he or she is. This is not necessarily true. I love using the sport of Powerlifting as an example of strength, because that’s exactly what the sport is…strength. If you look at the top female divisions in USA Powerlifting (USAPL), these women put up some massive numbers for their size. If you look at these women, they don’t look like the Hulk, and if you saw one of them on the st ..read more

At Force Barbell, have a process of training for everyone that walks through our doors and wants to continue to train with us. We assess and evaluate each individual and make training suitable for their current level of fitness or performance. We are able to do this because we already have our own built in philosophy of training. Our philosophy is simply a list of needs we believe each individual needs to meet or optimize in order to reach their full potential. You could think of this list in the form of a pyramid. You can’t build a pyramid from the top down. So, the most important qualit ..read more

The Most Common Deadlift Mistake
Force Barbell | Powerlifting
by Justin Frazier

The deadlift is one lift that many would agree upon is their most favorite. It is usually the lift that you can move the most weight on, especially for beginners, and generally it doesn’t seem to take too much technique to do it. You just lift the weight off the ground. Pretty simple, eh? However, there is one common mistake almost all people make who are new to deadlifting, and even for some people who have been deadlifting for years. I believe the first movement of the deadlift is the most crucial. Where your body goes when the bar is first lifted off of the ground is very important. This pa ..read more
