Yesterday Variety broke news that legendary Hong Kong producer Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, Fearless) has started production on a new action film called The Furious in Bangkok, Thailand, and he's enlisted the help of some of Asia's leading action talent. Like, the best of the best.    The Furious will be directed by Japanese stunt director and action choreographer Tanigaki Kenji. His Pan-Asian cast includes former Chinese child actor and action star Xie Miao (The New Legend of Shaolin, My Father is a Hero), Indonesia’s Joe Taslim (The Raid: Rede ..read more

Friday One Sheet: THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY
ScreenAnarchy
by

This cream-coloured, coffee focused, exercise in minimalism and symbolism is for the tight, one location 'bag of money' suspense thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County. I have no idea why, but i wish more designers would put the title of the film in quotations, it just gives things a bit more weight.  Am I wrong? The chunky hand painted sign quality of the title card helps. The film is set some time in the late 1970s, in a gas station, diner, and hotel cluster in the Arizona desert, and the cooper style of the tagline, and tucked out of the way, lower right credit block, is a subtle nod t ..read more

Udine 2024 Review: CITIZEN OF A KIND, A New Kind of Hero Rises in Delightful Female-Centric Vigilante Drama
ScreenAnarchy
by

If its films and dramas are to be believed, South Korea is a land teeming with vigilantes. They are typically brooding, sharply dressed and very attractive characters with dark pasts who mete out justice with brute strength or elaborate schemes, but Deok-hee, the earthy protagonist of Park Yong-ju's invigorating vigilante film Citizen of a Kind, is nothing of the sort, and what a refreshing change that is. Played with dowdy intensity by Ra Mi-ran (Miss & Mrs. Cops), Deok-hee is an ordinary laundress who is in desperate need of a cash injection following an accident at work. A great weight ..read more

Exorcism runs in the family on and off screen as Russell Crowe becomes the ultimate method actor, albeit unwillingly, in Joshua John Miller's upcoming possession horror flick, The Exorcism.   Carrying on a tradition left to him by his father, actor Jason Miller (The Exorcist), the younger Miller tackled the possession genre in their sophomore feature film. THE FEELING THAT THE TIME FOR DOING SOMETHING HAS PASSED Review: Comedic Discomfort in Millenial Ennui
ScreenAnarchy

While ennui and angst are common to many generations, I can imagine it could be much more accute among millenials - anything that might have been considered a 'normal' life gave up the ghost before they came of age. They're wedged between the AIDS and #MeToo generations, so navigating relationships and sex is a minefield. More so for women, who are still stuck under certain expectations from both sides, and little skills with which to navigate. Or perhaps it's better to say, they have the skills, but society won't let them utilize those skills. Joanna Arnow's feature debut is a darkly comedic ..read more

Kimo Stamboel's latest supernatural chiller, Dancing Village: The Curse Begins, opens in U.S. cinemas tomorrow, April 26th, from Lionsgate Pictures.  Despite having written about and supported Stamboel throughout their career, ever since their debut feature film Macabre, I've never truly spoken with the director. Until now. Through the wonder of technology no times zones, no geological challenges such at hemispheres and different continants got in our way this week as we sat down with them to talk about the new flick.  Watch as we go through a bit of background on the true story cla ..read more

THE KING TIDE Review: The Fable of a Miracle Gone Wrong

Living in a harsh landscape, somewhat apart and isolated, means you make certain choices about how much assistance you will receive, and how much protection you will offer your community. It also means that legends can grow up around people who perhaps offer more than a human being can expect: fear can grow in isolation, and cults can develop that often bring a selfishness from desperation. Such as happens on this particular island off the east coast of a mainland - unnamed, but a fishing community that has fallen on decades of hard times, with people often wondering why they continue to gras ..read more
