My eldest son once screamed so loudly and for so long during a tantrum that I told him I was going to call the Police. I then got my phone and pretended to dial.  He absolutely believed I was speaking to them.  He was three at the time.  Our kids will need therapy. Three years later he had a nightmare that he had been separated from us and taken to the Police Station for questioning for something he didn’t do.  He woke me, crying. Your kids will need therapy… We all make mistakes.  Our kids will need therapy at some point.  Much of that will be our fault. But ..read more

I’m not a Perfect Mom. But I’ve learned that can be a good thing… For Mother’s Day last weekend my youngest son made me the most beautiful card with the help of his teachers. It made me cry. His teacher wrote his answers but I could see they were his… and that he cut it out himself, which made me proud. He is four this year. With the biggest blue eyes you’ve ever seen. His card made me cry because of what had happened the night before. We were all sick. Coughing our lungs out. And it was freezing cold. I had us bundled up the entire day at home and just saw a sleepy evening ahead with hot wate ..read more

We’ve often wondered if our kids would benefit from good quality sunglasses in our hot South African sun.  But we’ve also been concerned that low quality lenses could impact their vision.  Wondering if your child needs sunglasses?  It’s time to put your questions to the experts… Betsie’s passion for child eye care started when her twins, from a very young age, had to wear prescription glasses. She then realized that it is not only important to protect their little eyes from the harsh sun but also her very active boy’s eyes who spent most of his days outdoors. She ..read more

Have you ever been caught in an avalanche of negative thoughts? It’s time to THINK yourself happy… Negative thoughts can seem inescapable and overpowering – growing ever more destructive until they take on a life of their own, crushing your happiness in their wake.  It’s a terrible way to live, yet it is the norm for many of us. We don’t realise that this way of living is a conscious choice that we make. And even fewer of us know that we have the power to control our negative thoughts. Luckily, the brain’s emotional circuits are linked to its cognitive circuits, which we access whene ..read more

Why do we find it so hard to take care of ourselves? Going solo can be the most freeing and valuable thing you can do for yourself and your family.  My boys are five and six now and I have been away from them a full total of four nights in six years – two of those were when my second son was born. Recently I lead the charge to practice what I preach and take some time for self care… A few days of rest and peace can achieve a lot.  Especially when it’s been years! Here is a photo journal of a very special weekend away at Leeuwenhof Country Estate If you can’t manage to get away f ..read more
