The Northern Ireland Bonsai Society was founded in 1986 by a small group of people interested in the wonderful art form of bonsai and realised the need for an organisation to promote and further it in this country. We are a society dedicated to spreading awareness and knowledge of these beautiful trees and bringing them to the attention of the General Public.

Great Night on Friday as Sean gave a yamadori larch it’s first styling. He took a bold decision to style the tree in a candelabra style. This is where, in nature, the main trunk dies off and several branches attempt to take the place of the leader. Sean did a great job of the design and it was an enjoyable and informative night ..read more

We spent a short while reflecting on the clubs achievements last year and discussing future plan. Following on from the official business of the AGM Ian critiqued each of the trees that members had brought along. Everyone took away really useful advice for the future development of their tree during the interesting and informative session.
It was a really popular raffle this week and Alex was the lucky winner of the cotoneaster that had been generously donated ..read more

Ireland is made up of 4 Provinces and up until now the only one not to have a Bonsai Club is Connaught. However that’s about to change as starting in the New Year they plan to start regular meetings and the guys involved are already hitting the socials to gather up the interested parties who live in that general area. It will be based in Galway City and I hope to be able to support them going forward. Give them a follow and if you’re in the Connaught area and are interested , give them a shout ..read more

We had an amazing February meeting that included an air layer demo, expertly performed by Gordon, followed by the draw for the Larch from the January meeting which was carried off by one of our new members. It was great to see so many of our new members and such a buzz in the room.
The following day members were kindly invited to dig up a 20+ year old field grown crab apple tree for themselves.
Hot on the heels of the fantastic February programme we are looking forward to Ian putting together a Beech group planting using Sean’s great quality yamadori collected material.
If this wasn’t eno ..read more

We had a great time sharing the events of 2022 and planning for the year ahead during our club AGM. It was brilliant to be able to welcome 3 new members at the meeting.
After all of the formalities were completed Ian (chairman) talked through design and styling using 2 of 3 yamadori Larch that he had brought along for that purpose. He demonstrated various techniques including adding interest to a long straight trunk on one of the trees. There will be a ballot during the meeting in February and one lucky winner will be walking away with the first tree that was styled in it’s stylish washing up ..read more

On Friday night Peter spoke for nearly 2 hours on every aspect of pine bonsai care and development. Club members had been encouraged to bring along pines in various stages of development for Peter to use to illustrate his talk. An incredibly interesting and informative delivery and everyone walked away with more understanding and knowledge to apply both now and over the coming years.
Peter hosted Saturday and Sunday workshops for members where limited places filled up fast. Each attendee brought along a tree to work on and Peter’s advice and work yeilded some amazing results and his gifted tra ..read more
