As spring approaches, gardeners begin planning what to plant for the coming season. As the Evergreen State, many fruits and flowers are easy to grow here. When I lived in an apartment, the only growing space we had was a few small boxes of peas and strawberries on the patio for our kids to enjoy. At that time, having a real garden felt like an unrealistic dream.
Enter the community garden: An area of land set aside by the city or county where community members can rent out a section of land for the season and make it their own.

Spring is here! For some folks it’s time for spring break, and for others its simply time to bust out of hibernation mode. If you’re like me, you might be envying others who have plane tickets to Disneyland or Mexico, knowing you’ll be spending the break at home. It’s around this time every year I start to get the travel itch, but don’t always have the budget to fund the vacations of my dreams. This year, in lieu of a pricey distant vacation, I’m attempting to be a more intentional local explorer, and for good reason.
This past September, our family opened our home to Nerea, a 17-year-old exch ..read more

In 2023, the Clark County Council proclaimed April as Child Abuse Awareness Month, coinciding with National Child Abuse Prevention Month, also in April. “Child abuse is 100% preventable,” said Amy Russell, executive director at the Arthur D. Curtis Children’s Justice Center (CJC) at the time of the proclamation. “National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect is to ensure parents and caregivers have the knowledge, skills, sup ..read more

The history of the 78th Street Heritage Farm is a story of community. In 1871, Clark County obtained the property from a local family and used it as a farm to feed those in need. Today, it is home to many gardens; some belong to families and individuals who rent garden space while other plots are used by the Clark County Master Gardeners for demonstrations and testing. And ten acres are farmed by Clark County Food Bank (CCFB) volunteers.
Community gardens like this have proven to be a vital resource to combat hunger locally. Not only does the farm provide fresh food for families in need ..read more

Our very own Vancouver is now home to two Guinness World Record holders, and they just so happen to still be in diapers. Toddler twins, Lydia and Timothy Ridgeway, may have celebrated their first birthdays just last year, but they were born from the world’s oldest known embryos resulting in a live birth.
In 1992 an anonymous couple donated embryos leftover from in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. If couples end up with excess embryos, or fertilized eggs in the very beginning stages of development, they can be frozen and stored for other families to adopt in the future. In the case of Lydi ..read more
