Nothing can prepare you for Watches and Wonders 2024 – nothing short of going to Watches and Wonders 2024. You're in the "motherland" of watches, surrounded by people who are excited about watches. Being on the ground with our Hodinkee colleagues, and new friends in the watch world keeps us inspired and excited about where things are going.
Throughout the week we kept our eyes peeled for what was going on in the crowds and on the wrists around us. We saw people wearing interesting watches in interesting, often unexpected, ways. That says as much about the state of watch collecting as headline ..read more

This weekend, Monaco Legend Group will auction off one of eight known (twelve made) Rolex split-second chronographs, the ref. 4113, from the collection of John Goldberger. If the watch sounds familiar, it's not just because it's the pinnacle of Rolex chronograph collecting. This is the very watch from Talking Watches that caused Goldberger to pick up a cheese knife, wipe it on his jacket, and pop the back off to show the movement. Now it's fresh to market and up for grabs as one of the cover lots, with an estimate range of €2,800,000 – 5,600,000.
The reference 4113 is a curious watch, as th ..read more

Last week, several eagle-eyed Patek Philippe fans noticed that the Aquanaut Travel Time suddenly went from 120m of water resistance to just 30m. I noticed it as I wrote about the 5164G in my Hands-On, but initially, I assumed it was due to the model changing case material from steel to white gold. Then I realized that, no, the same model in rose gold (5164R) used to have 120m water resistance but was now also down to 30m. Looking through the catalog, the same thing has happened to the Nautilus line. From 5990 to 5811, everything had shed 90 meters of water resistance. So what happened? The an ..read more

We are 100 days out from the 2024 Paris Olympics. How do I know that? Because Omega just gave a two-prong reminder releasing a duo of Speedmaster Chronoscope models in advance of this year's Summer Games. You might recall the brand unveiled the two-tone Seamaster Dive 300m with its white dial and gold bezel last year, and now we have our second set of commemorative pieces. The brand knows how to mark an occasion, ask James Bond or – um, okay – the Olympics.
So it was in that spirit that the Omega unveiled two, well technically four, new iterations of the Chronoscope with a decidedly Olympic ..read more

I bet most people have a watch they’ve convinced themselves they’re going to have one day, no matter how out of reach it might always be. The Patek ref. 5164 has long been my white whale. Like James Stacey, I'm a lover of a versatile GMT, and the Aquanaut is – in my opinion – the king.
When I wrote about the discontinuation of the ref. 5164A, I called it a "fan-favorite." That might be a bit much to say about a watch that cost over $40,000 and was nearly completely unobtainable by anyone but VIPs at Patek, but it was a great watch to imagine wearing and even better if you could actually ..read more

After record-breaking viewership of the Women's NCAA Tournament, it's time to turn our attention to the WNBA Draft, which takes place tonight. Iowa phenom, household name, and superstar Caitlin Clark is projected to be the #1 pick in the draft, which is currently held by the Indiana Fever. She had a historic season this year that took her and the women's game into the stratosphere. Just this past weekend, she made an appearance on Saturday Night Live, and last month, she received an offer from Ice Cube to play for his Big Three league. Let's just say interest in the women's game is at a fever ..read more

Since 2017, Cartier has dutifully reissued one of its classic shapes as part of its Cartier Privé collection. This year, one of the oldest takes its turn: the Tortue. Originally introduced in 1912 but also well-known for its neo-vintage era monopusher chronograph, the 2024 Tortue collection plays on both of these eras, featuring both two-handers and chronographs that should leave Cartier enthusiasts satisfied.
Cartier introduced the Tortue in 1912 (French for "turtle"), making it older than pretty much every Cartier shape except the Santos-Dumont (1904). By the 1920s, Cartier was addin ..read more

The day after Watches & Wonders is always a rough one. The night before, we had a fantastic party at Lucid Studios in Geneva, where the community came out in full force, and the drinks flowed. Afterward, the Hodinkee crew ordered some pizza to the hotel and stayed up late bonding before we all went our separate ways the next day. My flight was early and then delayed, not long enough to get any extra sleep but just long enough to be a tease. And then airport security (as always in Geneva) searched both my carry-ons because they were flummoxed by camera equipment. Then I see it. Something t ..read more

We flew back from Watches & Wonders on Saturday, just in time to catch Sunday at The Masters – and to witness Scottie Scheffler make a bit of history. Yesterday, the 27-year-old took home his second victory in three years and firmly placed himself ahead of the pack. On a course that has bested some of the greats, Scheffler finished Sunday with yet another donning of the iconic green jacket. I remember writing about his victory back in 2022, his first win at Augusta National, and catching a glimmer of steel and gold radiating against the verde sleeve of his new blazer. His watch of choice ..read more
