Turning The Screw at King’s Head Theatre

Last week I hot-footed over to Upper St in Islington. I was there to see one of the first shows in the new King’s Head Theatre dedicated 200-seat space. After a successful run at New Wimbledon Theatre Studio in 2022, Turning the Screw – written by Kevin Kelly and directed by Tim McArthur – tells the story of the famed composer Benjamin Britten, set during the pink panic in the 1950s as he grapples (and boy does he does grapple) with his homosexuality whilst composing his opera, The Turn of the Screw.  The theatre itself is a total joy. It reminded me of another time ..read more

Bert & May at Belle Cottage, Whitstable

We knew we wanted to create a special grown-up feel to Belle Cottage in Whitstable, where people would feel that care and attention had been taken when it came to the design, without it being too ‘designy. If you get my drift. Last year we all went on a family holiday to Cretan Malia Park, and while we were there, we were inspired by the tile design in our bedroom (if you scroll down through the blog post, you’ll see the tiles in our hotel bedroom) and decided very quickly that this was what we wanted to create in the entrance to Belle Cottage – our holiday cottage in Whitstable. We now have ..read more

A new brekky in town at German Gymnasium

There is something about walking into German Gymnasium in Kings Cross, that makes me feel like great things are happening around me. There are businessy meetings with scribbles in notebooks and laptops being tapped on, creatives chatting and laughing and definitely coming up with the Next Big Thing, families, friends… and always lots of chattering and buzzing – up at the bar, at around all the tables and there’s just something in the air… so do I love going there? Yes I do. And was I excited to hear they had a new breakfast menu this month? Why, yes I was and I was there in a shot. With Ben ..read more

Hunting for Gorillas in Covent Garden (True Story)

With the school Summer Hols stretching out in front of me for miles, I’ve been curating a carefully edited list of REALLY GREAT THINGS to do in London, either by myself, with Izzy or as a family. One of the best free events I’ve come across is the Tusk Gorilla Trail at Covent Garden, in partnership with African conservation charity, Tusk and Westbrook Gallery.  15 life-sized gorilla sculptures are hidden across the Covent Garden neighbourhood – next to cafes, on the Piazza and down twisty side streets… you need to keep your peepers peeled! You can download illustrated and digit ..read more

Restoring Wooden Victorian Floors at Belle Cottage

It’s been a while since I’ve popped up here to give you an update on Belle Cottage. And that is largely because the journey so far has been somewhat of a challenge. An enormous challenge, actually. Lots of disappointments and lots of being let down by various trades people. And I know that this is largely part of the course when you embark on a renovation project and curve balls are to be expected… but I think that those who have been privy to the ins and outs of our journey so far, would agree that we have had more curve balls than would perhaps be considered our FAIR SHARE. However. Amidst ..read more

The Lehman Trilogy at The National Theatre

I’ve never been one ahead of the curve, so it’s fitting that I should grab the hottest ticket in town on its third rodeo in London, this time at The Gillian Lynne Theatre. It is playing for a limited season of only 17 weeks, so you haven’t even really got time to read this post – just whizz over there and book a ticket now. What is The Lehman Trilogy about? On a cold September morning in 1844, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish ..read more

Guesting at Guesthouse in Bath

While I was in Bath last week, I stayed at ever so gorgeous No.15 Great Pulteney – the very first of GuestHouse’s beautiful boutique hotels (now one of many) located in a perfect position in Bath’s city centre. I am huge fan of GuestHouse, as you already know, but I will never tire of their eye for beautiful design, exquisite taste and of course, their unspoken understanding of what I NEED. They seem to know before I do. And it always involves popcorn, crisps and freshly baked brownies. GuestHouse offer a luggage collection service – they met me at the station with this clever contraption, an ..read more

Rebalancing in Beautiful Bath

It was such a treat to be back in Bath last week. Not only one of my happy places but also the city of healing, wellbeing, rebalancing and health. Ever since the Celts discovered bubbling hot springs beneath the city, Bath has been a destination for healing, and not just physical – The Romans used to flock to the baths to cure all manner of ailments – but also for spiritual and psychic healing. This February, Bath has held its very first festival of wellbeing – Rebalance Bath – and I was there with some other lovely folk to discover what it was all about. Various events are being held all ove ..read more

Bubbles at The Barbican Brasserie by Searcys

I have been going to The Barbican since forever. I remember running through the brutalist surroundings as a child, finding the whole place quite spooky. But as an adult, I’ve always loved the ambience there, the feeling of creativity and the expanses of grey and clean lines… I found myself there again last week, to celebrate the new arrival – The Barbican Brasserie by Searcys – which has taken over from the Italian restaurant, Osteria. I regularly meet two dear friends for brunch or lunch and is where we can catch up properly, on life, work, challenges, ideas… it’s always a special meeting an ..read more
