The first 2019 iteration of the Bitcoin Rodeo will be called The Blockchain and Technology Symposium. It will take place in Edmonton, Alberta on March 5–6 at the Edmonton Convention Centre. One of the panels that I’m most excited for will be “Fungibility and censorship resistance in the developing world”. For this panel, we’ve brought together an incredible group of speakers from all over the world. Rodolfo Novak, Luis Buenaventura, Mauricio Di BartolomeoRodolfo Novak Rodolfo Novak was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Security Tokens for Bitcoin Maximalists
Bitcoin Brains Blog

I’ve considered myself a bitcoin maximalist ever since Vitalik Buterin coined the term in 2014. For quite some time I championed the Bitcoin-only position, but over the last year I’ve spent a fair amount of energy defending myself to other bitcoin maximalists over my involvement with Oleum Capital and its upcoming security token offering (“STO”). Oleum is using tokenized financing to bring funding to junior oil and gas producers in my home province of Alberta, Canada. This article lays out why I believe that properly structured token offerings, which give real rights to token holders, lin ..read more

Will Amazon & Blockchain Join Forces?
Bitcoin Brains Blog

Amazon and Cryptocurrency, two of the most colossal words in print media today. There’s been rumours of Amazon getting ready to launch a currency exchange. At the very least, Amazon has definitely positioned itself for this outcome by purchasing domain names like amazonethereum.com, amazoncryptocurrency.com, amazoncryptocurrencies.com. DomainNameWire spread belief that Amazon was getting their ducks in a row regarding an exchange when the above domains were purchased by Amazon in November. With Amazon being known for its innovation, it would be more than likely that these assumptions are corr ..read more

Women In Crypto

Hi, my name is Ruzaan du Plooy, a Calgary crypto enthusiast that happens to be a woman. Did you know that only 8.3% of all cryptocurrency traders are female? Those stats just came out today, and I wasn’t shocked at all. I’ve began writing to break the stereotype and bridge the gap between what is seemingly a male dominated arena. A large collective back in the 1840's considered Ada Lovelace the worlds first programer. She theorized the loop process which is a vital part in computer programs today. She was an excellent mathematician and her experience and education gave her a unique persp ..read more

How can I protect myself against Bitcoin scams?
Bitcoin Brains Blog

Over the past few months, we have watched Bitcoin and Ethereum push cryptocurrency into the mainstream media limelight as the total market cap reached almost $125 billion CAD (even peaking above $140 billion CAD for a short time). During this same timeframe, cryptocurrency has found itself receiving media attention for reasons both good and bad. As is often the case, the bullish market created a new batch of wealthy Bitcoin owners as many investors saw their portfolios triple over the course of a few months. An 18-year-old American entrepreneur revealed that he had become a Bitcoin ..read more

What are ICOs?

ICOs or initial coin offerings are quickly becoming a favourite way to fund new bitcoin and blockchain related projects. With some tokens showing massive gains in value from the ICO price before the projects have even launched, they are also a hot target for investors looking for a big payday. ICOs are definitely an area where there is some potential money to be made. But before you decide to gamble on one of these ventures, there are some things that you should understand and be aware of. The truly exciting thing about these public ICOs we are seeing is the democratization of fundi ..read more

What are people using bitcoin for?

With the price of bitcoin reaching all-time-highs and trade volume taking off around the world, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that bitcoin is solving real problems for real people on a daily basis. As someone who’s been working on the front-lines, dealing with average(mostly new) users for many years, I’m constantly surprised by the new ways people are finding to use bitcoin. A few years ago, most outside observers would have associated bitcoin with the Silk Road and people buying drugs online. Since then bitcoin has evolved significantly. What the new users I’m seeing have in ..read more

“I wish I had invested in bitcoin before it was too late...”
Bitcoin Brains Blog

The first time I can remember hearing this was in the summer of 2011. The price of bitcoin was in the middle of a spike, up to $30 at the top of bitcoin’s first big “bubble”. Over the years since then I’ve literally heard this kind of statement hundreds maybe thousands of times. “I heard about bitcoin years ago and I didn’t take it seriously. I wish I had gotten in back then before it was too late.” I’ve been hearing these kinds of statements a lot so far in 2017. It’s a safe bet that anyone who decided not to buy bitcoin at $30 because it was “too late” would like to revisit that&nb ..read more

How do I get started with mining?
Bitcoin Brains Blog

How do I get started with bitcoin mining? In my previous article, I came to the conclusion that attempting to mine bitcoins for a profit is not a good idea — unless you have free power. However, there is a significant community of home miners operating in the cryptocurrency space, many of whom are making reasonable profits. Since the inception of ASIC mining drove GPU miners away from bitcoin in 2013, users have continued to mine alternative cryptocurrencies (altcoins) with hardware designed for computer gaming or other desktop applications. Enthusiastic users will create Frankenstei ..read more

What are altcoins and why should I care?
Bitcoin Brains Blog

This blog is targeted to users who are new to bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. For someone deeply immersed in the world of cryptocurrency, this may seem like a lot of information that you already know. However, I believe that in a space that so full of hype, speculation and drama, it’s good to slow down and evaluate why altcoins exist and see if your thoughts line up with my own. Since we opened our first bitcoin store in 2013, I’ve always gotten a lot of questions about alternative cryptocurrencies (altcoins). At first it was Litecoin, then came Dogecoin. Lately most of the questio ..read more
