What weddings look like in times of covid
Event Affairs
by Megan McIlrath
3y ago
In the first half of this decade, weddings were all about opulence and extravagance: mass floral installations, an abundance of beautiful bespoke furniture, tailor made champagne and cocktail bars, and so much entertainment that you’d have to remind yourself that it was a wedding and not the South African Music Awards. There were no holds barred when it came to guest lists with all and sundry invited including distant relatives and next door neighbours. Slowly but surely, weddings have become more intimate with guest lists rarely extending 100 guests. There’s been more of a focus on avoiding ..read more

Shannon and Stuart’s garden wedding was one of breathtaking beauty! The magnificent Nooitgedacht Estate, surrounded by rolling vineyards & mountain vistas in Stellenbosch, was the perfect backdrop to tie the knot. Shannon, originally from South Africa, and Stuart, from the UK, live together in Dubai. They were looking for a unique and beautiful location for their nuptials and they fell head over heels in love with Nooitgedacht Estate. Friends and family from all over the world travelled to be part of their wedding. The lush green garden with its towering trees set the scene for this memo ..read more

Bridal makeup tips by Yolande du Toit
Event Affairs
by Megan McIlrath

Yolande du Toit is a very talented hair and makeup artist that I’ve worked with since the beginning of Event Affairs’ inception. I trust her professionalism and skill so much that I recommend her to the most nervous bride. In fact, she did the makeup at my wedding, and frankly, I would not have had it any other way. I asked Yolande to supply three basic makeup tips for brides who are unsure of their look. I’m saying unsure because I have met some brides who come armed with such a thick look book,  they’ve pretty much done half my job and that of my suppliers.  So, for the less than ..read more

As a wedding planner, I know a lot about weddings. I’ll happily dish out all the details about flowers, entertainment, ceremony formalities, wedding timelines, and more. Here’s what she recommends for glowing dewy skin on your wedding day. “Whether your engagement is short or long, there is always enough time to improve your skin and have you feeling your best on the ..read more

Wedding Anniversary Gifts for the first five years
Event Affairs
by Megan McIlrath

My husband, Andrew, and I take our wedding anniversary gifts very seriously. Specifically, we like to incorporate the designated item for that year into our gifts and make them interesting, personal, and exciting. As there are traditional gifts and modern gifts, we leave it up to the individual to decide which one will guide the gift purchasing (or gift-making) process. With lockdown as our new normal, and our anniversary falling in April, we had to think out of the box this year and get a little creative. It was a pretty cool challenge taking the commercialism out of what should be, in essen ..read more

Event Affairs
by Megan McIlrath

On the 14th of March, we all went to bed within a world that was our normal – kids were going to school, shops were trading as normal, wedding plans were on track and couples excitedly counted down the sleeps until the big day. On the 15th of March, Cyril Ramaphosa announced a restriction on gatherings of no more than 100 people, followed with a further restriction on gatherings of no more than 50 people, which brought many bridal couples’ wedding dreams crashing down. The following weeks were filled with confusion and high emotions as couples tried to figure out what their rights are; and w ..read more
