Hey guys. So, recently we adopted a 1-1,5 year old dog from a shelter. He was rescued as a baby and had lived in the shelter until we took him last week. He has no defined breed, was netured as a baby,is very very sweet, barks extremely rarely and is generally very fearful of... well, everything, really. It's only been a week, and he actually has made a lot of progress regarding not being so afraid of us (me and my gf), but still has a long way to go. He's actually much less scared of her than me, but I understand that is pretty normal since I'm much bigger and all. Anyway, the issue I need h ..read more

Need help. Sad Chihuahua doesn't know where to 'go.'

Long story short, our friend was sick for a long time. Toward the end, we cared for her Chihuahua when she could not. After she passed, we took the dog in. Problem: Our friend wasn't always able to care for her dog properly, and eventually just put pads down in her apartment. Sometimes, she just let her out into the hallway of her building to do her thing. Please do not comment on our friend. She was ill and her judgement was not sound. Sometimes we just do the best we can until someone else steps in. But now her Chihuahua lives with us, and I'm having the hardest time house training (un-trai ..read more

Hi there I’m volunteering at a dog shelter and wanted to know if any of you guys had experience working on shelter dogs. I’ve worked with dogs from shelters, but I’m aware the situation is different. From what I found online, a short interview with the owner, and personal experience, I thought I’d focus on the following Avoiding Littermate syndrome on the puppies (3 pairs of siblings) Enrichment activities Kennel matters (down time, entrance/exit) Loose leash walking The shelter has never worked with a trainer and some of the dogs have been deemed “unadoptable” by the staff. I’ve been made aw ..read more

Resident dog is fearful of new rescue on adoption trial who is resource guarding.

Hi, hoping to get some advice/similar experiences as to whether we should cease the trial with a new rescue or to stick it out. Cross posted to r/dogs. We are currently on a 2 week trial with an extremely sweet rescue who we think came from a backyard breeder/not a great house. She is shy with strangers, but the cuddliest thing and is so sweet to us. She had a very lovely foster family who also had a few dogs, but had generally free reign in their home with we think, minimal rules to no fault of the family. She has no basic training, except for house training. Our resident dog is very sociabl ..read more

Dog hates swimming?

I have a 3 year old Standard Poodle who is AMAZING at every element of the junior hunt test for flushing breeds. Except I cannot get her to swim. The test requires that she sit on the edge of the pond while a dead duck is thrown into the water. She’ll then be sent to retrieve the duck which is roughly 20-30 yards away. I’m running out of ways to motivate her to swim. I’ve tried using other high drive retrievers and all she does is stand on the bank and bark. I’ve tried tossing treats into the water and incrementally increasing their distance away from the shore, but she won’t budge once the w ..read more

Training a fearful foster dog to come inside

I am fostering a dog that was rescued from a dangerous situation as a stray. She is understandably traumatized/terrified and I’ve been following all the tips on how to interact with a scared dog which has been working well (avoiding eye contact, giving food at a comfortable distance so she doesn’t have to approach me for it, etc). We have had her for only 3 days now, so she’s definitely still in the decompression stage (and is going to need more than the standard 3 day rec to fully decompress). She is so so sweet and when I do consent tests she actually asks me to keep petting her by scooting ..read more

Rescue poodle rejecting me

Hi all, I recently rescued a miniature poodle. The first few days were great, she seemed to bond with me straight away and was very affectionate. However, things changed when I went back to work. I’m in the office 50% of the week whereas my partner works from home full time. She has now transferred her attachment to him and seems pretty indifferent to me, but becomes distressed if left alone with me (pacing, sitting by the door, peeing in the house). I feel so sad and discouraged because I love her and I’m worried about how to cope with this long-term if it’s always difficult when he’s not ho ..read more

Hey everyone, I'm sorry for the upcoming wall of text, but i really need to get it off my chest and hope to maybe get some advice. So three years back we got a puppy from the animal rescue. She looked like a rough haired collie mix, I grew up with a French Bulldog and then later had a Cane Corso with my ex boyfriend till she was 6 and they moved away to a different city. Both dogs turned out amazing. An important side note here: as I am still a student, we made a family decision to get a dog together with my parents. So it had to be a dog that we were all comfortable with. I really didn't car ..read more
