Does vasilopita ever have charms inside?

We had some very generous Greek neighbors in our neighborhood when I was a kid in the 90s, and they would have us over for special meals from time to time. I don’t know what holiday it was, but they served some kind of cake one time that contained a bunch of lucky silver charms. I think I got a horseshoe? They were really small and fine quality. Google says it was probably a vasilopita, however it looks like that cake is only meant to have a coin in it. I have a vague memory of there being something gold in the cake as well, and was hoping to get it, of course. Do you think the addition of th ..read more

I'm making this post for someone who doesn't have reddit. One of her family members (who has greek roots), who has passed, made a dish a few times for her when she was much younger. She remembers roughly what it was called and has tried finding it online but either can't remember the spelling or it doesn't even exist. The name, sounded out, sounds roughly like: "kif-daddy-do-wawa". She describes it as some sort of egg patty with a thick, lemony sauce. We don't know if this name is just something silly that was made up or if it's an actual dish. Please let me know if this sounds familiar to an ..read more

I tried making Portokalopita for the first time for Greek Easter. It turned out fantastic. I used the recipe from Akis kitchen. It is so unique and delicious, I’m not much of a baker but I’m happy I gave it a shot submitted by /u/themuffinsaretasty [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Messed up my tzatziki sauce :c

So I tried making chicken shawarma for my room mate tonight(I know this is not greek), but since I really enjoy greek food, I tried to make my own tzatziki sauce to go with it instead of the traditional yogurt sauce. The recipe I used called for a tablespoon of dill and the only dill I could find locally that would deliver was the pasted dill in a tube. Since I didn't have a tablespoon handly while mixing it I eye balled it(probably the biggest mistake). Since I was tripling the recipe I tripled the dill and omg, I feel like I ruined it. The greek restaurant here in town doesn't even seem to ..read more

Hi. I went to a Greek restaurant last year in Germany (I know random), and I ordered a dip of this creamy tomato sauce. It was one of the best things I've ever had. I've been looking all over the internet for what it is but all I'm finding is regular tomato sauce, or tomato and feta salad. It was a hot blended sauce (could be feta in it?), and I cant find it on the restaurant menu anymore. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. submitted by /u/Thefoxiestyoke [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
