SAPPO celebrates World Animal (Welfare) Day
World Animal Day is celebrated annually on 4 October and is aimed at celebrating and advancing animal welfare. We encourage SAPPO members to use the day to self-evaluate the welfare conditions on their farms, to highlight to their personnel that welfare considerations are non-negotiable. The RPO took note of the announcement by the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Ms Thoko Didiza on 16 August that all movement of cattle is suspended for an initial period of 21 days with the option to extend it.

SAPPO Bi-Weekly Update
Week 27 (2022)
A word from the CEO
Letting go of the past certainties
With October on the horizon and 2022 entering its last mile, there is a notable level of despondence and frustration among multiple agricultural industries and ordinary citizens. Equally, you should feel incredibly unsettled by the state of the entire South African livestock industry – specifically the pig industry. Ironically, this may seem like two opposing outcomes, but should rather highlight the fact that all of us should be truthful and realistic about the state of affairs and accept that collectively we can mitigate risks ..read more

Week of 15-19 August (2022)
A word from the CEO
Hope is not a strategy
We should not be under any illusion that our business environment is going to get any easier. On the contrary, as decay and poverty settle in over rural and peripheral urban areas, the risks of animal diseasing spreading are only going to get higher. The idea that high-end, large-scale segments of the meat value chain can safeguard themselves from more informal, disease-prone supply chains, often perceived as disconnected from their own operations, was proven to be fiction in recent weeks. So, th ..read more
