Dinosaurs left behind more than their bones. There are dinosaur traces everywhere—tracks, trails (trails are like tracks, but more irregular—left by snails or worms crawling, by jellyfish dragging tentacles, or markings left by crustaceans or sea urchins), burrows, nests, eggs, tooth marks, and even their poop and vomit. All of these things (known as ichnofossils or trace fossils) give us clues into how they lived and how they behaved.
We explore these traces in our two-part mini series.

A lot, if not most, of what we know about dinosaurs is based on their bones. For most of paleontology, scientists didn’t think it was possible for anything but the bones to fossilize.
But in recent years, paleontologists have been finding new ways to study old bones, and have found that in some cases (and more often than we think) soft tissues have been preserved.
It’s a big deal, and can tell us a lot more about these animals.
Soft tissues are so cool, we created a whole mini series around it, called “Beyond Bones.”
What are soft tissues?
Soft tissues are in most parts of the body, and they ..read more
