Fifteen new community projects and priorities will be receiving more than $17.7 million in new federal funding for California’s 49th District, the office of Rep. Mike Levin (D-California) and community leaders announced Friday.
The funds were allocated to the 49th District as part of a bill signed by President Joe Biden last month to fund the federal government through Sept. 30th. Each U.S. Representative was allowed to submit up to fifteen community projects for funding.

As San Diego Mojo nears the end of its opening season, the women’s volleyball team will play its final three home games at Viejas Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Mojo (8-9) faces the Vegas Thrill (6-13). The Thrill lead the season series 2-1, having swept the first meeting in Las Vegas on Feb. 19 and won in five sets in San Diego 10 days later. The Mojo swept the last match on the road on March 24, the first road victory and sweep in franchise history.

The San Diego Association of Governments has appointed Mario Orso, current chief deputy director of Caltrans District 11, as its new CEO, it was announced Friday.
Orso takes over following last year’s resignation of Hasan Ikhrata, which prompted a nationwide search for the regional planning agency’s next chief. His three-year contract with SANDAG will begin June 17.

Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad was among five California educational institutions named Friday as U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School honorees.
The recognition honors schools or districts “for conserving resources while promoting health and environmental literacy.”

Alaska Airlines is expanding service from San Diego to Las Vegas, along with new routes and additional capacity at other West Coast destinations.
The Las Vegas route will become the airline’s 39th nonstop destination from San Diego and depart four times daily. Booking is open now with service beginning Oct. 1.

Firefighters Friday continued dousing smoldering hot spots on the fire-ravaged Oceanside Pier, a day after flames engulfed the western end of the historic seafront landmark in the northwestern corner of San Diego County.

A 63-year-old man who distributed fentanyl that led to the overdose deaths of two people in North Park has been charged by federal prosecutors, it was announced Thursday.
Scott Anthony Sargent is accused of providing fentanyl that killed two victims on Nov. 10, 2022, described in court records only as Z.W. and M.L.
First responders found the two dead victims inside a bedroom, along with Sargent and another person who also overdosed, but recovered.
