When most wildlife enthusiasts think of safari, the Great Migration comes to mind. This year-round phenomenon takes place across the vast plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania and also crosses over into the Masai Mara in Kenya during part of the year. Millions of wildebeest make the clockwise journey from the Southern Serengeti via the Western corridor, then to the Masai Mara and back into Tanzania through the Eastern Serengeti. The reason for this continuous movement is to follow the food source which, in East Africa, is all dependent on the rain. The huge herds follow the rain because they kno ..read more

An African New Year’s Eve
Travel Beyond – Africa

Over the holidays, my colleague and I, along with some friends, hopped on a plane for Africa! After spending time on Safari, we headed to Zanzibar (an island off the coast of Tanzania) to refresh, relax and celebrate the new year! We stayed at a beautiful lodge and our villa had direct access to the beach, which made me feel like I was walking into an exquisite painting every time I approached. The white sand beach and turquois water captivate you completely – making it the perfect place to ring in the new year! Our evening started with a lovely seven-course wine and dinner paring, which hig ..read more

A Green Season Photo Album

The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular natural events on Earth, involving the movement of millions of wildebeest, zebra, and other herbivores across vast distances in search of food and water. From January to February (although exact timing varies each year), the herds gather in the nutrient-rich ecosystem of southern Serengeti. The area provides an optimal environment for the migrating, pregnant females to give birth and for the newborns to thrive. The babies are born into conditions that support their growth and development. Known as the “green season,” this time in the Serengeti ..read more

On this visit, however, I not only explored these main iconic sites that we all picture in our minds when thinking of Egypt, but also enjoyed many opportunities to experience several unique and special moments that greatly enhanced my trip! The Grand Egyptian Museum I started with a sneak preview of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) before it’s ..read more

With any upcoming trip, there are always two assurances for me. The first and regardless of prior aspirations, is that packing will begin the night before departure. The other, that my mind will inevitably wander in an attempt to envision what the ensuing days will look like. Some destinations have been visited before, so expectations are a little more material.  For others, they are the very first experience and no amount of internet searches, tales from mom’s friend’s friend, or documentary-cramming on the eve of the flight can truly prepare your mind for what will follow. There is nothing quite like adding a beach experience onto your safari. After the very-early wake-up calls in the bush, it is nice to have a more relaxed pace and some different activity options to end your trip. It creates the perfect balance to round out an African adventure. I recently had the opportunity to safari in the Zambian bush and follow it with a visit to the private island retreat of Miavana, Madagascar. And if you are looking for the ultimate beach destination, it simply does not get better than this– serene, peaceful, and picture-perfect vistas in every direction, beautiful ocea ..read more

When planning a trip to Southern Africa, one place that comes up again and again as a “must-do” is visiting the majestic waterfall and nearby town of Victoria Falls. A visit to the Falls itself might only take a few hours, which might leave you wondering how to spend the rest of your time in the area—or perhaps how many days are needed to appreciate all that this region has to offer. Answering this question can greatly depend on your interests, but ultimately, a good place to start is to consider what type of accommodation you would prefer to spend your time in: a safari lodge or city hotel.
