Can you do a winter wedding with British flowers....?

Yes is totally the answer! All too often I have people scratching their heads trying to work out how they can still have British, locally grown flowers in Winter. Whilst we have to be a little more creative it is certainly still possible to have a beautifully seasonal wedding floral display in the winter months. Image by Debs Alexander If you are having long tables I would recommend going for a larger low bowl like these below or the one above. Embracing the seasonal foliage is still like bringing the outside in which is what we always try to achieve in the high season. Adding a simple floral ..read more

March seems to have lived up to its name and marched through at great speed… how are we nearly into April? From those lazy days in January each month seems to have picked up the pace, and whilst I’m keeping up, there really isn’t much time to relax! Last week I was delighted to create a bespoke group course for Anneris Flower Farm and her colleagues. Five of them travelled over from Italy to enjoy a week of brilliant Cornish sunshine, ok I joke, the weather was rather pants, however they had a wonderful time. Elisa wanted to combine garden classes with floristry and so I set about designing a ..read more

Seasonal ingredients from the garden by The Garden Gate Flower Company Today the Cornish mizzle lifted and with it took my creative block. Having started the morning with an energising swim, I returned home to the cosy kitchen and began creating a bowl arrangement which I captured on video. If you head over to my Instagram account I will share it there for you. It was nice to do this again. At first I thought it might be a bit triggering, after all I started doing these in lockdown. However, I actually enjoyed creating an arrangement for myself. Normally I would happily settle for a bunch of ..read more

I’m reminded of five years ago when the ‘Beast from the East’ arrived on our doorstep and the country was a blanket of snow and the garden fell back into the depths of winter. Granted in Cornwall we have no snow but it feels like someone just pressed pause on Spring. This time last year my husband and I were on our first international trip after the lockdown. Whilst very excited I was also mildly stressed as we were bang in the middle of a heat wave. The tulips were so close to flowering and to stop them all blowing pre wedding season required a shift around the garden to keep them in the sha ..read more

The germination table - 2023 wedding flowers by The Garden Gate Flower Company. Half term came and went rather quickly with the teens. Mornings were mostly spent by myself until one or both of them surfaced at noon for food! I too found my mornings slightly more at a lazy pace which was actually quite a refreshing break. Monday morning returned to the early alarm and the mad panic to get food into them before busses and trains. However, what we all noticed was the change in light. 7am and the light had suddenly returned! We had lazed through this change over the holidays but now we could al ..read more

Gardens in Winter - Blue Monday

Blue Monday Blue Monday probably does sum up today for me - the rain of the past weekend has been relentless. The woods is full of water so wading out with Mabel is a battle. Notification of an energy increase dropped into my inbox and I’ve just watched South West water take a meter reading which all seems to add to the gloom! The January Fidget January always feels like a long month to me. I think most gardeners can relate to this. Whilst the break from weddings is lovely and the season makes you come in early and sit by the fire - my fidgety self finds waiting for spring hard! The garden is ..read more

Milestone Moment This wreath making course felt like a real milestone moment in what has been a challenging few years. The last time I taught was in the March of 2020 as the world was starting to lockdown. It was a 121 class at Duchy of Cornwall Nursery, I was teaching my lovely student about how to approach a career in floristry, my phone was ringing off the hook with couples panicking about their wedding date. For my poor student it might have been the reality check she needed of life as a self employed person, however I do hope it didn't put her off! Fast forward two years, 50 odd weddings ..read more

Antirrhinums captured by Holes in the World Studio It would be fair to say that this winter has been both long and wet. Whilst I’ve tried to find the enthusiasm to get out and make a start it seems each weekend has been met by a new storm of some name and the garden is a bog of mud! I so grateful for a tunnel enabling a bit of rest bite from it all! I thought I just give you a bit of a run through of what’s been going on as it seems a while since my last blog post! Cleaning Up A lot of time in February was taken up with mass cleaning projects like the tunnel plastic - I’m note sure it’s been ..read more

Teaching at J W Blooms captured by Holes in the World Studio It would be fair to say that this year saw me take a back seat from the teaching side of my business. There were many reasons for this; an already flooded market and a move from one garden to another so I felt this year was a good time to just take stock. Market Place In the last ten years this floral world we are in has quite simply boomed, interior designers are turning to floristry, photographers are turning to floristry, art students are turning to floristry…. It has without a doubt raised the bar on the end product and I believ ..read more

Flower Study - Viola August compote captured by Holes in the World Photography This year has been about trialing some new varieties as I’m now the proud owner of a rather large tunnel. One flower that I’ve fallen in love with a lot over the years is the humble viola. This little flower makes up for it’s size in personality and believe me when I add it to a compote arrangement I can honestly feel my heart sing! So, here I’m going to share with you a few things that I did to get these violas to a stem length that was really useful in my floristry. John of Holes in the World has captured this li ..read more
