This light, airy and beautiful home has Cambridge on its doorstep. I think I’m safe in saying that the word ‘rubberised’ is an unusual one to find in Country Life. In fact, a quick search reveals just four uses in the archives: one in this wonderful article on military watches; one in a piece on shooting jackets; one in Nicholas Foulkes’ favourite shops in Britain; and finally a mention in Martin Fone’s ‘Curious Questions’ entry on the invention of the pneumatic tyre. Today, all that changes as the word ‘rubberised’ appears four times in this article alone, in reference to the rubberised bask ..read more

The new property hotspot, the house names that command the highest prices, and how the appeal of Grade Listed homes could be fading. Here's our round-up of what's happening in the world of bricks and mortar. Fore Street in Chard, Somerset. The new housing hotspot is…Chard There are several places that sprung to mind when I tried to guess where the new property hotspot could be. Trebrea Lodge near Tintagel is more of a manor house, and is ready to become the ideal Cornish family home. Trebrea, Cornwall. The interiors are modern, but the exteriors ache with listed charm. What do you think when you hear the word ‘lodge’? Is it, a small property, likely no more than three bedrooms, likely in a wilderness? Or do you think: ‘No, a lodge is a Grade II*-listed country home, with four bedrooms, four reception rooms, outbuildings and gardens designed by Jinny Blom’. The gracefully modern interiors means this is a home ready for contemporary living. If you replied with the se ..read more

For those who can't decide between London and the country, this house provides the answer. (So long as you have rather deep pockets.) The traditional check list of ‘things you’d like included in your next country house’ is no doubt quite extensive. Sash windows is probably on there, as are fireplaces, an Aga and a wine cellar. Lovely gardens too, of course. A coach house, naturally, for use either as home office or granny annexe. What you don’t expect is to be able to add ‘walking distance to a Tube station’ into the mix. Yet that is exactly what we have at Hillside, as pretty a Wimbledon pro ..read more

From The Manor House to The Glebe, research from Savills reveals the 10 most expensive house names. The Grove House in Richmond. This example is on the market for £4.95 million, far exceeding the Savills average of £962,000 for homes of the same name. What’s in a name? Well it depends. When it comes to a person, probably not that much. When it comes to a home, however, it can be quite a bit (at least, financially). Savills have done some digging, and found out that properties with the name ‘The Manor House’ command the highest price tag in England and Wales.  This may not come as an enorm ..read more
