What is LEMR? LEMR stands for Low End Market Rental. This term is used by the City of Richmond and others to categorize units that will be rented at a rate below market value, and is part of the city’s affordable housing strategy. However, it is not sufficiently effective as these units may not be rented out to the people who need them the most. Currently, there is no accountability or visibility on the program — therefore, it is difficult to discern whether the program is successful, or how to improve it. In addition to July 11 being the date of the last Richmond City Council meeting on July 11 where the recommendations in Richmond PRC’s submission on non-market housing were approved, the date also marked the official launch of the Richmond Electors Needing Tenancy (R.E.N.T.) campaign. Richmond City Council approves PRC submission on non-market housing

Good news! On July 11, Richmond city councillors unanimously approved all three recommendations from the Richmond PRC’s submission on non-market housing. City staff has been tasked to perform research and produce a report, which should be presented to council in the fall following the Oct. 15 municipal election. In the meantime, work will continue on the campaign, with an upcoming event planned. On Thursday, June 2nd, 2022, the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition (RPRC) held their second annual general meeting. Members and guests reviewed activities that occurred in 2021. In addition, the coalition unanimously agreed to adopt the Richmond Community Protocol:  Responding to Racism and Hate. The City of Richmond is hosting a series of facilitator-led community conversation sessions that explores the meaning of home and home-less through shared experiences, stories and discussion. These interactive and in-person sessions aims to bring forward ideas and to discuss how to build a more connected and inclusive community. The Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition’s latest new project, in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health, is entitled “Improving Pedestrian Safety in Richmond through Vision Zero Strategies.” We are looking for self-identified Richmond residents on low incomes who want to learn job-ready skills as a Project Assistant.
