Mechanical Engineer / NDT Tech?

Hi guys, I’ve got about 2-3 months left of a mechanical engineering degree from an average university in NSW. For the past 18 months I did a residential role in Roma QLD, where I gained qualifications as an Non-Destructive Tester (MT, UT, RT etc.). I’ve since moved back to the Gold Coast to finish my degree and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on where I should go from here? It seems like most NDT roles pay more than engineering now days but they require you to be residential or have advanced tickets for NDT for any serious FIFO roles. Should I try and get in big with a blue-chip comp ..read more

How are precious minerals like gold transported in remote areas like Australia?

OK.. I'm not a thief, but I've always been interested about how precious minerals like gold, silver or even uranium get transported across vast remote places like the West Australian desert. Places that could be hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away from any serious police response would seem like a great target for thieves as they would have all the time in the world to get away before the cops showed up. If anyone could share some stories about how it's done I'd appreciate it! submitted by /u/Arnold_Rimmer22 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello fellow miner and engineers with our jobs being in remote location and needing to relocate to another side of the country to get career progression or find jobs It makes it difficult for your spouse to progress their career or even find one in small mining towns. How did you guys manage? I in my first serious relationship after being in the mining industry for a while. And I am discovering it’s hard to keep a relationship when your either away from her for 2 weeks or suddenly want to switch jobs and need to relocate. submitted by /u/guguan [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is there any money if I want to maintain a big city lifestyle?

Civil engineer in mining surface infrastructure for a mining consulting firm. Currently work in a big city and occasionally travel to site. Make about 90k. Want to touch 200 as a goal. I know that there is money in some areas of mining but all those require a certain lifestyle I hate. I don't want to live in mining towns nor do i want to live in unstable dangerous places like burkina faso, Mauritania, Colombia and such. I'll begrudgingly travel a few times per year but that's it. FIFO I might do for 1-2 years but never long term. I want to maintain my big city lifestyle of coming home every n ..read more

Transitioning from Scotland to Australia for a FIFO Mining Career as a Boilermaker

Hello everyone, I'm a 20-year-old fully qualified fabricator welder (boilermaker) currently based in Scotland. Despite having an approved visa and accommodation arranged in Perth, Australia, I'm struggling to make the leap due to the challenge of securing a job in the FIFO mining sector. I am currently employed here in Scotland and am hesitant to relocate without having something secure in place. I hold a full driver's license and have ensured my CV is up to date, but I'm facing difficulty due to the industry's preference for experience, which I'm finding hard to acquire without that initial ..read more
