Various mics on Clubdates

I tuned my Clubdates to sound a little better out front, and used 5 different mics I have to see what the differences are in the mics. One I've never used before a Shure Prologue 16L. It sounds the worst of all. It may make a good hi-hat mic though. I think the sound is the most accurate with the Equation Alpha Series condenser mic that I use as overheads live. That part starts at the 12 min. mark. I also have kind of cool playing towards the end of each segment of the video. I tried to show case the kick and toms, but I'm a rock and country drummer, so it's not real melodic or anything jazzy ..read more

Hi mass, low mass, and all that stuff

Today for fun I set up a Yamaha Absolute and a DW Collectors 9 X 12 tom. Both have the same heads, I tuned both with a tune bot for high sustain and placed them both on snare stands. The only difference I could hear is that the DW had a little more low end towards the end of the decay. Even then it was very slight, I messed around with them for about a half hour. The Yamaha is a straight shell, the DW has re-rings. Obviously the hardware on the Yamaha is much lighter and it has aluminum die cast hoops. The hoops on the DW are triple flanged steel. I was hard pressed to hear a differe ..read more

Howlin ring

I stumbled across a tuning with my segmented maple snare drum that I just had to save for posterity. I'm not sure I can replicate it after I change the tuning. I thought it had a bell like quality to it. The ring is...well you decide. I'm not saying it's a really useful tone. But from a ring standpoint, you have to give it props. So I just purchased a clarinet. It's a Vito Reso-Tone 3. The instrument is in fabulous shape visually. Serial #D11647. Numbers match top and bottom. Minimal scratches, no reed. The chrome is beautiful. It came with the case, it looks old (or retro). I paid $10, and a 40 minute drive. Anyone have any insight on this? Attached Images ..read more

A year or so ago; Benny Greb and the Royal College of Music Big Band played a night Buddy Rich tunes in London. No full video clips or recordings have been released due to copyright reasons, only preview clips on YouTube. I’ve never been one to turn down a good treasure hunt. Any ideas? I know the concert was captured on film and tape due to the existence of the preview clips. Just need a happy accident to find the right person or forum to get my hands on it ..read more

Roland SPD SX Problems

Hi all, I purchased a Roland SPD SX special edition (the red one) a month or so ago after giving up on my Alesis sample pad after just 6 months. I therefore thought that all my sample pad woes were over, but I was wrong. There are a couple of things that happen with the SPD SX that are impossibile to ignore: 1) Sometimes, when I'm playing a beat, the pads don't respond for about a second and then all the sounds pile out at once, which would be highly disruptive in a gigging situation. 2) When I play a longer sample or a loop and then hit other pads, the long sample/loop I hit fi ..read more

Greg Gaylord Drum Solo question

When Greg was making his own drums, before he went to Craviotto, he made them out of all kinds of woods. A friend has one that says 'Banana' on the inside of the shell. Did he ever use that wood? I don't see it listed on the wood hardness scale and all I can find is that it's mush and useless as a hardwood. Any knowledge on this out there? Greg ..read more

Just bought TD-9, trying to use drum software

Hey guys, I am new to the edrum scene. Recently moved and have been looking for an edrum kit so be able to start playing drums again. I finally found a decent deal on a used TD-9 and have been trying to get it set up with my laptop to work with drum software and have been having issues. The seller provided his UM1 MIDI to USB adapter and said he used to use it with his computer. I started setting this up yesterday and found that the UM1 apparently does not have drivers for Windows 10, however I found forum posts saying you could modify the inf file of the drivers and force the Windows 8 dri ..read more
