I posted this in big/4 Reddit but posting here as well in hopes of reaching a larger audience: So Im 23 years old and currently work at a big 4 in Canada right now as a staff accountant (audit). Within a year, I have realized I hate audit, I don’t like the management style and how there’s so many people in the firm. It feels like I have no personal connection with anyone and everything feels so cut throat and political. And I can’t describe it but I just feel pressured to take on more work , work long hours and I never really know if I’m doing a good job cuz no one cares enough to tell u how ..read more

Alright, so got put on a pip. Started looking for a job just because I don’t trust pip/See what’s out there. Anyways I see something I like about the same pay I’m at now, so not an issue there . Question is should I stick out the pip duration see if they fire me (I think they will) and chill on unemployment for a bit, or get a new job now? submitted by /u/Witch_ninety9 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Why government isn't all "greener pastures" as people say it is

It's fucking convoluted. Like my place is expecting me to know disbursement payment filing within a week. I can understand the building blocks, but putting all the sequences together is a huge pain in the arse. To make matters worse, the person training me is leaving in a month! It's all a good team, but I can tell they are running a bit out of patience. I have a 1 year contract to burn by, so hopefully I can survive. But also, when they ask if I have any questions, I can't say much because I don't understand. Even after they go over again, and I write notes down, I still do not understand. L ..read more

Insights on Working at a REIT?

After seeing how much people hate their jobs at public accounting firms, I recently accepted an offer to start as a Staff Accountant at a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). As this will be my first accounting job (besides internships), I'm eager to learn more about what to expect. If any of you have experience working in a REIT, could you share your insights on the role and the environment? I'm particularly interested in hearing about your daily responsibilities and how you found the overall experience. The reit is midsize with about 1-5 B in revenue. submitted by /u/Snoo-81269 [visit redd ..read more

I really fucked up on a project opportunity. Is it likely that I may loose my job???

I have been working in accounting for 8 years. Last week, my boss gave me a task to do a last minute financial set up for this new client. We had to do 5 months of bank recs, relatively simple on a cash basis. I was really excited because I wasn't doing well for a while. Was even put on a Performance Improvement Plan 2 years ago. The past half year, I have been doing so much better and have been really proud and happy for the work I have been producing. I was turning in my work sooner as well. So when my supervisor offered this project, I took it and was really happy to prove myself. In summa ..read more

Don't sleep on a career with large CPG manufacturing (Plant Controller, Financial Analyst, Cost Accountant, etc)

There are a lot of posts here with discussion about career paths in firm work, government, and then the never fully identified 'industry', so I wanted to share how CPG, manufacturing, and specifically for me, food and beverage, really changed my work life for the better. I started out of college at a medium regional firm for 4 years, but never really liked tax, audit, or bookkeeping... which were all the services our firm provided. I got my CPA while working there, left, and then hopped around to a bunch of Senior Accountant roles within different companies/industries, never really having a s ..read more

Has anyone left a job because they felt like they weren’t learning? Or is this normal?

3 years into industry job. Good people, WLB, hybrid, decent pay, but my brain is turning to mush. I’ve been here for so long, but somehow feel like I don’t know anything. I haven’t been able to exercise my accounting knowledge like I believed I would be able to. Most of what I do month to month is copy, paste, and roll forward, with the occasional headache of chasing my manager down to give me context on a situation. I’m the absolute yooooungest on my team, and I’m the only one with a CPA. I feel like I’m not being challenged in a beneficial way and my knowledge has slipped immensely since le ..read more

41 years old, burnt out and considering options

ETA: I mean career options, not a career in options. A little background: I have 20 years of experience in public accounting - most of them doing tax work for business owners and high net worth individuals. I decided a long while ago I did not want to go the partner route because I planned to have a family and every woman I knew who had become partner at my small firm regretted it. So I’ve been a manager for what feels like forever, doing far more work than I am being paid for. Because of the dearth of talent in the profession, I’ve also STILL been doing prep work at times because my firm has ..read more

Hello all! I'm a 22(M) senior pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. I'll have 18 credits (6 classes) left after this semester. I don't have an internship in line, but I am working full time in land development while enrolled in school. Knowing that I'm set to graduate Fall 2024, I would like to get some ideas of what my options are after actually getting my degree. Here's some things that I will point out: - I want my CPA license - I'm in Florida - I only want to work 40-50 hours a week (I'm assuming big 4 is out of the picture?) - I plan to pursue my Master's and specialize in Auditing ..read more

Hi everyone, I just got let go from my first ever accounting job. The firm was very small like 10 people that did audit and tax work. I guess they were not happy with the progress I was making and said that it wasn't working out. I'm kind of freaking out. I really wanted to work in audit. But the training at this place was just so terrible. They basically just left me to figure everything out. When I asked questions I would get all this push back or a 1 sentence answer. Sometimes I would get real nasty furious emails back when I asked questions. It was crazy. There was only 1 person there who ..read more
