Writing as a Tool for Living Through Crisis

“How’s your apocalypse going?” That’s something I heard Phoebe Bridgers say during the early months of the pandemic and it’s continued to ring in my ears ever since. Because greeting each other with humour during trying times is a coping mechanism I simply refuse to give up. When you’re exhausted and life seems hopeless, allowing yourself to laugh seems wrong… but sometimes it’s all you have. via GIPHY I don’t want to talk about humour today, but I do want to talk about writing as a tool during a crisis. And I use that word because our world is in a crisis. State of affairs Here in the UK, w ..read more

I’ve been experimenting with following the moon cycles this year and although I’m no expert, I’ve found it interesting to work with these dates instead of a typical calendar month, especially when it comes to journaling and intention setting around my creative practice. So I thought I’d give you a brief rundown of how the cycles work and how you can integrate actions around the new and full moon to build a life you love. Find out the exact dates and times of the 2023 moon cycles here. Each full cycle lasts around a month. Moonology by Yasmin Boland is a great book. New Moon This is the time ..read more

Overcoming self-doubt as a writer

Oooof this self-doubt malarkey is a total ratbag, right? I’d bet my last Rolo that you’ve asked yourself at least once “When will I stop doubting myself as a writer?!” It’s something that pops up in conversation with the writers on my course, as well as in the comments on my insta posts. It’s something that I’m still in a constant struggle with – even though I’m a published author, writing journalistic pieces and a prolific blogger! It can really hold people back from going for their dreams, but also in the every day as a writer or creative. In short – self-doubt sucks. So how do we go about o ..read more

10 things I wish I’d known about imposter syndrome

At some point, in every job I’ve ever had, I’ve felt like an impostor. I’ve felt unqualified to make coffee, not good enough to manage a team and certainly not smart enough to write a book. But you know what? I’ve done all of those things, and while I can’t guarantee my cappuccinos were ever frothy enough to win any prizes, I was never truly an impostor. It was all in my head. Here’s what I wish I’d know….. 1. It’s real and totally normal It’s a psychological pattern in which you doubt your accomplishments and have a persistent, internalised fear of being exposed. 2. It gets worse the higher u ..read more

If you follow me on Instagram then you’ll already know that I started 2019 with an exciting new project, the Positive People Podcast. I know what you’re thinking, EVERYONE HAS A PODCAST. Granted, you are correct and I’m not going to deny that the podcast market is somewhat saturated. But personally, I am currently subscribed to 50+ podcasts and listen to hours of episodes every day so I’m hopeful that there are plenty of you folks out there who can spare an hour a week to listen to our show. I say ‘our show’ of course because I have an amazing co-host called Amy Holland. Amy is my internet w ..read more

Being offline, writing a book and eating ice cream for breakfast

It seems fitting that the last 12 months of my life have been bookended by two amazing – yet entirely different – holidays. In the summer of 2017, I watched as everyone else in my workplace jetted off to various locations from Tenerife to South Wales, only to throw my hands up in the air towards the end of September and scream ‘I NEED A HOLIDAY’ in an entirely unnecessary and dramatic fashion. I called my mum and within a few days, we had booked to go to Menorca for the last week in October, getting a bargain deal and returning home on the last flight before the island quite literally shut u ..read more

Talking therapy – a painful step in my recovery from depression and anxiety

It’s easy for me to sit here and tell you to get therapy. I was lucky enough to receive counselling from the NHS after I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and without it I’m not sure how my recovery would have panned out. Walking into a tiny little room every week and baring my soul to a complete stranger seemed unthinkable at the time, but I knew I was lucky to be given access to the service so I always attended my appointments, even though I dreaded them. I saw a Community Psychiatric Nurse over the course of a year and it wasn’t easy. In fact, it was really quite uncomfortable at ..read more

Wedding planning with depression and anxiety

I started planning my wedding in 2014, just two years after my initial diagnoses of depression and anxiety. On the outside, I appeared to be quite happy and excited but truthfully I found the whole experience rather stressful. To be honest I could get stressed in an empty room and it’s definitely one of my triggers, so I try to keep it under control. But planning a wedding is a whole new level of stress that I’d never experienced before! I wrote about my experience in detail in this article which I published on the Metro, and Yvette and Ellen asked me to appear on the podcast last week to de ..read more

7 reasons why you need to make an emergency self-care box

I’ve had my reservations about the term self-care. It seems to be taking over the internet, forcing us to take regular bubble baths and spend a fortune in Lush products in order to maintain sanity and I’m really not feeling that way of life. Recently though, I looked bit deeper into the meaning of self-care and I had a bit of a revelation. If you’re struggling to understand exactly what self-care is and how it should be practised, simply remove the first word and you’ll find a simpler way of looking at it. So remove the word ‘self’ from the equation, and reflect on the word ‘care’ for a mome ..read more
