Just like there are different forms of sign language in different countries, many areas in our country express things in varying ways. As the title of this entry suggests, if you are from Michigan, you better use the word POP when referring to Coca-Cola, but many regions refer to that type of drink as SODA, and some call ALL those fizzy drinks “Coke.” More to the point, people in different areas of the United States have different accents when ..read more

Feeling discouraged with your ASL progress? Have a student who struggles to remember vocabulary? Convinced yourself that it’s too difficult to learn a new language at your age? ASLdeafined had fun at the Michigan Library Association conference in Port Huron last week! We look forward to hearing from some of the wonderful professionals we connected with to help us reach the goal of improving communication one sign at a time. It was also a pleasure to get to know our fellow exhibitors. It’s always refreshing to get out of the office and share our passion for American Sign Language with others. We wouldn’t let anyone leave our booth without learning at least one sign, and it was a joy to see the smile on people’s faces as they walked away knowing ASL for “Halloween” or ..read more

October is here! This means that autumn has officially arrived. As the temperatures get more chilly outside, you can lean into sweater weather and feel no guilt having that pumpkin spice latte and donut for breakfast. It is also an especially good season for getting into the habit of an apple a day. We hope that you take a break from raking to enjoy the leaf colors or maybe the whole day off to go on a hay ride! We bet we don’t need to remind you of Halloween, but of course you need to watch a football game at some point. Until you do, click on the underlined words in this paragraph to learn t ..read more
