I create a (free to download/reuse) book of katas during lockdown - it was to help those learning kata. It contains diagrams of all the moves plus step-by-step guide in English and Japanese. I was given some feedback from this reddit community. One request was to add embusen to each diagram. I have republished the book and corrected some small errors people pointed out. I hope this is useful to karate-ka. https://katastepbystep.com/download-book/ (feedback welcome) p.s. I am also working on a history of each kata - if there are any hints/tips then please let me know and I will add to the webs ..read more

Just a further look in my other Karate gear from my previous post. I mentioned I had some gloves I used for Shotokan training and competition. But I HARDLY ever use these because we don't really train for competition (except for national tournament after seminars for our Shotokan Week) The WKF gloves I use for competition, again very seldom I ever use these but they're handy for me to have. (No pun intended) I use the old school Shotokan gloves as training (substitute handwraps) for when I work on the bag at home. I don't use the white gloves in the dojo either. It's just something to pr ..read more

Hi all, Wondering if anyone here is training/has trained in the Cary/Apex/Holly Springs area, and has a dojo they’d recommend. Trained previously in Shotokan, so that would be ideal, but any place that has impressed you would be appreciated. Thanks! submitted by /u/w00k27612 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Do you document your sparrings?

At my dojo we do quite a lot of sparring, and I started documenting them about 6 months ago. By that I mean taking notes about my sparring partners (strengths, weaknesses, favorite techniques) and fights (what did I score, what did they score, my learnings from the bout). After some time I found that you start to notice patterns, and it gives you a lot of ideas for things to try during your next session. My sparring level has increased dramatically since then, and more importantly I find I have tons of fun doing sparring - it's become much more playful for me: I'm less reluctant to try new te ..read more

Are there Dojo Red Flags? I’m changing clubs and am unsure what to look out for

I’m searching for a new dojo, and as I’ve come from a small club, I wanted to ask if there’s any red flags to watch out for? I’m currently looking at a dojo that has a lot of locations. It’s a little daunting because mine was only two locations in a couple of community centres. This new dojo has four classes around an hour long. My last dojo had two classes per week that were two hours long. It’s also more expensive, my last dojo was $70 a month vs $38 a week for four lessons at this new one(I was told I don’t have to do the full 4 though). This is really different because classes were compul ..read more
