Tim Koch is Roman around.
News that stunning frescos have been uncovered in a new excavation at Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried in a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius in AD79, reminded me of some other Roman wall paintings, ones of interest to HTBS Types. They were produced around one hundred years after Vesuvius and were found on the via La P ..read more

A rower’s blades sculpt
the marble of the water,
a sculpture that disappears
the instant it is finished.
In the making of their art
is its unmaking,
every stroke a masterpiece
seen only in a passing
flash of recognition.

there. The harbor lay calm,
so calm that when
a seagull standing on a piling
turned its head, the whole of the scene
appeared to shift. A whistle,
I could not determine from where ..read more
