Hopefully, it has been a few weeks and teachers feel back in the swing of things. September is time for creating a classroom community. Many of the teachers in my building celebrate the month by making self-portraits. Check out some of the beautiful children below! We have student's outline with a pencil and go over it with a Sharpie. The last part is to color with pencils, markers or paint.  Jessica had her student's paint on a canvas and hung them up with Command hooks(easy for next year). She got the canvases for a great price at Michael's.  Amy had her students draw, outli ..read more

My favorite things this week!   During Interactive Writing this kindergarten class listed their Super Reader Powers!!  We had extra bubbles and decided to let the kids write what SUPER POWER they are working on.  It's so important for kids to have individual goals (even in kindergarten)!  What am I working on as a writer today? This teacher found it helpful to give her student's a few choices.  What are we learning about from favorite authors? A first-grade teacher getting ready to conference with students about nonfiction text. Below are some ..read more

One of the goals in my building is to find opportunities to create anchor charts with the kids.  Last week, I taught a lesson in a first-grade classroom on how to give your reading partner a great book introduction. The students did a great job during the focus lesson but the teacher felt like many students did not try this new strategy out during partner reading time.  We decided that creating an anchor chart would give the student's a visual reminder of how to give a book introduction.  We plan to give copies of the anchor chart to partnerships.  ..read more

Here are some of my favorite literacy things happening in my school this week.  It is Five For Friday and I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching. Happy Friday!  A first-grade teacher in my building made this anchor chart, which represents the writing process . The kids can move their clips to the spot in which they are working in. The goal is to have the kids go through the process many times before publishing a piece.  Thank you for sharing Laura!  A few weeks ago, I attended a TCRWP reunion. One big take away my primary team had was the idea of having studen ..read more

Here are some of the great things happening in my school this week. Five for Friday During interactive writing time, this class wrote about their trip to the apple orchard.  During reading workshop time, students can easily read the wall with a pointer. Eventually, the bulletin board will come down and be made into a big book. This teacher had students help write some of the words to this pocket chart for shared reading. The words come from the book, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. These first graders are creating a Thinking Map about bats.  I LOVE this ..read more

I have blogged about shared reading before and I can’t help but head into this school year, excited to make shared reading time even better than last year. I love shared reading because it brings joy to the classroom. Students are having fun while reading! We can begin shared reading by singing songs and reading charts. The warm up songs and poems can be added to student's book buckets. Some teachers have binders in which they can easily add the song as well. Some classrooms create small little books from the songs during interactive writing. Whatever you do, keep it simple. I know one reas ..read more

I recently went to a workshop at the TCRWP reunion called Toolkits Can Make your Teaching More Ambitious, Memorable and Efficient. Celena Larkey the presenter began her talk holding a big binder, loaded with goodies. Throughout the presentation, Celena shared how she goes about using different tools to teach writers in her primary class. A toolkit is a collection of various types of tools to help meet the learning needs of all of your students. The toolkit below is something I plan to use when I conference with students during writing workshop. Although Celena shared her toolkit and my init ..read more

Lots of great things have been happening at my school this week. I loved watching kindergarteners learn about reading mats. Students learned about putting  Post-its on the back of a book and making tallies every time they reread. This is an easy way to recharge and energize students to reread books in their book bins.                      Reading and listening new spring books. Teaching a strategy lesson on reading smooth. I love this anchor chart from Jenn Serravallo's Strategy book. This book is an excellent resource to ..read more
