Introduction I am a first generation American. As a child of immigrants who came to this country with a strong drive to succeed, it was only natural for me to be taught the value of hard work, commitment and, above all, education at a very early age. In Augustine’s Confessions, he begins with the story of his early childhood going into high school, while also talking directly to God throughout those times in his life. While there is much to reprehend from this story, there is still such a lack of detail that it can be hard to picture Augustine. He wrote his book in the context of his life back in the 400’s, so it can be very hard for a reader to visualize it very clearly. It is of paramount importance that we recognize the state of Augustine when he was writing this piece; that of reflection; a novel written by a man contemplating his past, not one written by a man looking to educate posterity.
