Tactical/Mental – Bat without an ego Who are the best batters? Easy answer: The ones who score the most runs. Do the best batters always find batting easy? Absolutely not! Do they struggle at times? Yes. All the time! Do they do whatever they can (find a way) to get through challenging periods? Yes! Whatever they have to do to succeed on the day! As a batter, every single ball is a unique contest with the bowler & ball. It’s very rare that you are in full control and at the top of your game for an entire innings (it feels easy). In any innings you will go through periods where you ..read more

Attention Parents – Is your behaviour setting your child up for failure? Recently in our Monday Motivation email, I wrote about how a change of mindset turned @ashbarty from a good tennis player to the world’s best. In years gone by, Barty felt like she was defined by her performances on the tennis court, which created a lot of baggage. With the help of mindset coach & mentor @mojocrowe the @wimbledon champion changed her perspective on what tennis meant to her identity and value as a person. “Playing tennis is what Ash does but it’s not who she is and doesn’t define the depths of ..read more

Mindset – Overcoming mistakes Does making mistakes frustrate you? Do you let one mistake ruin your net session? Are you a perfectionist? If you answered YES to any of the above questions or you’re a young, aspiring cricketer who sets high standards of yourself, please read this post. If you enter a net session and expect to be perfect and not make mistakes, you are setting yourself up for failure. One of the most common things I see that holds people back is the inability to move on from a mistake. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a player’s whole session ruined after star ..read more

Batting Technique – Fix the first issue in your sequence for a better result Everyone knows that you should ‘play the ball late’ but so many people don’t know how to. Coaches often yell at batters to ‘play it later’ but don’t actually give them the tools to do so which only confuses a batter. So many batters are limited in power and control in their shots because they hit the ball too early. But that’s not their main issue. Hitting the ball early is usually the end result of an earlier error in ‘technique’ (body position). When we’re working with our athletes we always focus on unders ..read more

T20 Round 1 vs Country XI, 29th November 2020 [Report written: 30/11/20] On Sunday, we had our first T20 of the season against a representative team from the Country. Again, we won the toss and batted first and I opened with Wellsy but it didn’t go to plan. Wellsy was first out, in the fourth over, with the score 27, before I was caught at deep mid-wicket in the 6th over for only 7, having chewed up too many dot balls. We ended up making 5/137 thanks to an excellent unbroken partnership of 74, by Sam Fanning and Joel Curtis, two guys I work with every week. It wasn’t enou ..read more

The 6 Pillars of Success
Cricket Mentoring

Have you ever asked yourself, what is it that makes Steve Smith or Virat Kohli so special? What is it that separates the best from the rest? Not just in cricket, but any sport or industry. Growing up, I aspired to play cricket for Australia. Watching the Aussie teams of the mid ’90s and early 2000s, made me want to represent my country and travel around the world playing cricket, as it did for so many other youngsters around Australia at that time. I sit here at 32 years of age and like many who dreamt of playing for their country, I unfortunately wasn’t able to achieve it. However, it w ..read more
