“When you are finished changing, you are finished” is a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin. For 39 years, I was a joint replacement surgeon at a large academic medical center in Chicago where I rose to be the Head of the Joint Replacement Program and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. My next stop for 11 years has been in the emerging discipline of Regenerative Medicine. In the latter, I introduced evidence-based medicine integrating clinical practice with clinical research. In so doing, I worked with several biotech companies proving outcomes data by continually monitoring the results of my ..read more

Joint pain, stiffness and swelling aren’t always inevitable results of aging The above headline announced a featured article in the May 10, 2023 edition of the New York Times. Last Saturday night, my wife and I attended the Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert and watched Riccardo Muti conduct Rachmaninoff’s hour-long Second Symphony; Muti, born July 28, 1941, made sure the energy never lagged and the orchestra’s focus never wavered. As I marveled at the composition, I was also struck by how the conductor virtually completed a continuous aerobic workout at times almost genuflexing while at other ..read more

For My Life in Orthopedic Surgery and Regenerative Medicine, Those Were the Days

Today, we started scheduling patients for their 12-week follow-up appointments. I am reminded that July 31, 2023 will be my last day of practice prior to retirement. It has been a long and rewarding journey starting in 1967, as an intern at Cook County Hospital in Chicago for one year followed by 42 months of Orthopedic Residency at Northwestern University affiliated Hospitals. Next came six months of a Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem while waiting for my orders to serve in The United States Air Force. After one year of active duty, (there followed e ..read more

Before I get sentimental about the past — as the song “Don’t Let the Old Man In“ still resonates — let’s focus on the brightness of the present time since I am still offering evidence-based treatment options including but not limited to: 1) Micro-fractured Adipose Tissue. It is the only FDA-approved treatment option that allows access, adipose-derived (from your fat), to stem cells and growth factors in treating an arthritic joint or joints 2) Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentrate from you allowing for access to your stem cells and growth factors in treating arthritis 3) Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP ..read more

Regarding Stem Cells and Plasma Rich Growth Factors for the Symptomatic and Function Limiting Shoulder

The number of patients presenting with shoulder-generated complaints has dramatically increased in the past several months. Some complaints follow a single trauma, while others are the result of cumulative injury. Then there is osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and causation by metabolic disorders; and as in any joint, there is the possibility of a congenital predisposition. When the patient presents to me with a chief complaint related to the shoulder, my initial focus is to make sure the symptoms are not referred from a cervical spine abnormality. Then a health assessment adds informat ..read more

A pause for Biologics; but I am back

It has been many years since I took personal time off to change offices and receive a “tune up” for my arthritic joint right hip. I am back. This past Wednesday, I completed three concentrated bone marrow procedures in my new settings under local anesthesia in our specially designed treatment room. Because the patients are participating in a Clinical Study, when combined with the elimination of the surgi-center dependency, the cost of Regenerative care for an arthritic joint is far less when compared to previous fee schedules. The same holds true for next Wednesday when the emphasis will be on ..read more

Unadulterated Corruption in Regenerative Medicine

Marketing and Reach can be bought; experience cannot. What prompted me to address the fake news concerning Regenerative Medicine is the lasted media blitz repeated in print, on the radio, and on TV by the current opportunists with the standard unsubstantiated testimonials by influencers who are paid to play. While History Repeats Itself may be a song released in March of 1966 and recorded by Cab Calloway, the phrase actually has been credited in different forms to George Santayana, Winston Churchill, and Mark Twain. The general idea of history repeating itself, however, is of much more ancient ..read more

When Choosing Regenerative Medicine Options, Ask for the Outcomes Data

Most of you are probably old enough to remember Sargent Joe Friday on the radio and then the TV detective series, Dragnet. His calling card: “just tell me the facts”. Over the past several weeks, I have been confronted with a significant healthcare issue as so many men are after age 55. My specialist provider sent me for test after test and then finally scheduled me for his treatment choice for my situation. I did keep the initial appointment with the next subspecialist who then mapped out a treatment protocol that was to start in 72 hours. I started having reservations about the proposed and ..read more

As The Stem Cell World Turns

From Bob Harman, CEO, Personalized Stem Cells: “In November of last year, I sent a letter to all of you about the Cell Surgical Network (“Berman”) FDA case ruling by Judge Bernal and how this created a unique opportunity to for us to create a pay-for-service business and work with physicians like yourselves to offer treatments to patients of their own cultured cells outside of a traditional clinical study. Since that time, FDA has filed an appeal. Although we believe this process could lead to a broader opportunity, at this present time we believe it prudent not to rely on this ruling for broa ..read more
