Dear Friends,   It's been very gratifying to receive your notes of thanks for starting the Petition--thanks very much for your thanks! I appreciate how many people are now engaged and stepping up to research the issues, meet with others, and take action when called for. Yesterday, the number of names on the Petition surpassed 2300!   Since launching the petition a little more than two weeks ago, I've become exhausted from talking so much about beach bathrooms. My body is now telling me it's time to resume letting paint rather than words speak for me. Please know I'm not abandoning t ..read more

Stakes are Now Low, A Building will be Higher       My Dear Art Friends,   Many of you have visited my Studio & Gallery. While you were here I'm guessing you visited the Frankfort Beach on Lake Michigan, pictured above. I often walk to this beach several times a day, all year round. Yesterday, I encountered the stakes that you see in the photos I've posted here.   The stakes show the location of a permanent, plumbed bathroom on the beachfront, construction of which now appears imminent. They also indicate the end ..read more

Painting as Joy Mining

This painting has been through several versions before landing here as "Mining for Joy." Its most recent title was "Current Events," inspired by the streaming white marks that seemed to flow in and around various elements which I considered as a way of seeing what's happening in the world today—that there's a flow of life that surrounds events in the headlines. The longer I looked at the painting, however, I saw muddy areas that appeared to block the "flow" of the current. Although I'd already signed and posted the painting, I decided to rework it again.   I've recently been reading essa ..read more

Baby, It's Cold Outside ....

Just Getting Warmed Up .....   BRRR .... I hope this finds you snug and warm in the weather that's affecting so much of the country. Here in northern Michigan it's very cold outside. There's lots of snow on the ground and it's still falling. The wind's whipping about even as a pale sun is trying to poke through the dark gray cloud cover. After such a warm December, it's a bit of a shock to be reminded what winter is really all about!   At least where I am, it's cozy inside. I'm fortunate to have very little reason to step outside on days like this--one of the perks of my em ..read more

(I recently found this piece of writing in my blog drafts. I'm not sure why I didn't publish it when I wrote it last May, but I'm posting it now in hopes that I and other artists will be reminded of why we must create. In a world filled with many distractions which seem more worthy of our attention, may it help to remember the higher purpose our art serves and celebrate the collectors and fans who recognize this. Happy New Year! )   I was painting in my studio one afternoon when I felt the buzz in my right hand rear pocket indicating an incoming call. The display read Victoria, British C ..read more

The Art of Art & Book Promotion

I have a reputation for being an excellent marketer of my art. When I meet people, they exclaim. "You're so good at marketing!" To be honest, I'd rather they first said something nice about my paintings; however, I gracefully receive what is meant as a compliment. I realize that in today's world, commercial success often counts for more than artistic accomplishment. And, compared to those artists whose work sells for five, six, or seven (or more) figures, my earnings barely make a blip. Still, I try not to pay attention to that and simply do what I can to make the best art I've capable of mak ..read more

My Dear Art Friends,   It's been a good while since I've posted a blog—publishing my book Monet, Mitchell & Me: A Painter's Pilgrimage has taken precedence. Now, the book is launched and, if you haven't yet done so, you should buy a copy and read it! It's getting good reviews from readers who follow my art and I think you'll like it. In spite of the fact that it's a good book, Monet, Mitchell & Me has a snowball's chance in hell of becoming a mainstream best seller (I've been told I don't have enough Instagram followers!), so I'm relying on word of mouth to get the book in the ha ..read more

It Really IS a Process21

When I set out to write about the trip I took to France last October, I had only a vague notion of the book it might be. It seemed like a good idea and, after posting early drafts on this blog, I received enough favorable feedback that I was encouraged to stick with it. So, I continued retracing my footsteps along the River Seine until I caught up with myself walking to the beach in Frankfort and beyond. Creating—producing something out of almost nothing—is one of my life’s greatest satisfactions. If I stand with a brush and pigments in front of my easel, chances are good a painting will appe ..read more
