Is there a healthy Alcohol?? Hello and happy holidays! I can’t believe we’ve nearly hit the end of another year. This tends to be a time for celebration and relaxation, and I’m guessing there is a common question on everyone’s mind. Is there a healthy alcohol drink? And if not, what is the healthiest option? The answer to the first, sadly, is NO, but fortunately there are some options that are better than others. Clear hard alcohol drinks such as vodka and gin tend to be a better choice. You can make a very low calorie drink with no added sugar by simply drinking with ice and lemon ..read more

One Brave Woman’s Journey with Parkinson’s

I received this letter from a user of The Daily Dose.  Her story is quite unique but I felt it was very honest and her account of the many obstacles she has had to deal with as well as her ability to keep going were moving to me.  I thought others might relate to her experience. Our House = PD x 2 Parkinson’s Disease. I’ve known about it forever. My grandmother had the “bad shake” in her right hand and arm – almost like playing a fast guitar. But that didn’t stop her – she crocheted and em-broa-dreed (spelling like she pronounced) until she couldn’t anymore! She died at 94 ..read more

The four letter F word July 31, 2017 Yes, the one that nobody wants to talk about. To fast is defined as refraining from all food or drink, except water, for a certain period of time. There are many different methods of fasting, some of which can be quite challenging. In fact, whenever you hear the word fast, I’m guessing there may be a few other words that come to mind and fun is not one of them. However, there is one type of fasting that is easy to follow and can significantly benefit patients with Parkinson’s Disease, Autoimmune Disorders, weight challenges, and food in ..read more

Self –Assessment: 4 Simple Tests to Keep You on Track I can only imagine how frustrating it must feel to have a diagnosis like Parkinson’s Disease.  Being told you have a progressive disease can be unnerving and make you feel like your body is out of your hands.  Part of my role as a Physical Therapist is to teach people how to take some control over their disease.  We know that exercise is one way that people can help slow the progression of the disease and fight against the symptoms of Parkinson’s.  But how can you tell if you’re winning the battle?  I try to give ev ..read more

Do you know where the toxins in your life hide?

Neurodegenerative Diseases and Toxins Don’t Mix! While family history is well known to be linked to Parkinson’s Disease, the link between Parkinson’s Disease and toxic environmental exposure is also becoming clearer. For example, toxic environmental exposure can cause damage to the nerves in the area of your brain that control the muscle tension and nerves. Living around, or with, environmental toxins may be harmful to neurons and can also cause the depletion of Glutathione, which can greatly affect mitochondrial function. One of the common factors in Parkinson’s Disease and other Neu ..read more

Stephen Bergenholtz is an active member in the Parkinson’s community in Seattle.  It has been a pleasure having him as part of The Parkinson’s Fitness Project’s A.M.P. Class Team.  He recently wrote a very relatable piece for The Michael J. Fox Foundation about PD and Apathy and I am pleased he was willing to share that piece as part of our blog as well.  I think the advice he gives is something every person living with PD can follow.  Thanks, Stephen -Nate Coomer, PT,  “Parkinson’s disease (PD) made me lazy, I told myself as I wallowed in lassitude for ye ..read more

Hello and Happy May! April 26, 2017 I am loving the longer days and excited for the warmer days to come…. This month I am very excited to talk about a term that was completely foreign to me, and largely unrecognized, when I first heard of it roughly 10 years ago.  Now,  it is becoming much more recognized and it may even sound familiar to you – “Leaky Gut”.  Although most of the medical profession does not recognize this term, in my opinion it undoubtedly affects overall health and can be linked to many disorders that are becoming increasingly common.  What is this myster ..read more

Lets Meet! March 26, 2017 Hello and let me introduce myself.  My name is Jennette and my passion for nutrition began over a decade ago when I experienced first hand what the simple act of healthy eating was able to accomplish in my own life.  Soon thereafter I was fortunate enough to work with several people close to me, including my husband, children, and close friends, witnessing this same transformation in their lives.  Since that time I have dedicated myself to the pursuit of helping others achieve increased wellness through nutrition.  As a fa ..read more

Lightheaded???… Understanding the Reasons Behind Low BP with PD.
The Parkinson's Fitness Project

Have you ever stood up from a chair only to feel like you’re going to faint or fall back down?  This lightheaded, dizzy feeling can be scary and it happens all too often for some people with Parkinson’s Disease.  The symptoms result from a sharp drop in blood pressure when changing positions.  If the blood pressure continues to drop after 2+ minutes of standing, this is called Orthostatic Hypotension (OH). Symptoms of OH can cause a loss of balance and falls that can result in serious injuries. OH tends to be more prevalent in mid to late stage PD.This is why it is important to ..read more
