Pound-for-pound: Does Ryan Garcia crack the list after his sensational victory?

Ryan Garcia’s dominating victory over Devin Haney on Saturday created a tricky situation here. On one hand, Garcia turned in arguably the best performance of the year so far, putting his No. 10-ranked pound-for-pound opponent down three times and winning a majority decision to stun the favored Haney and the boxing world. Garcia deserves credit for executing a good game plan to perfection, which certainly raised his stock. On the other hand, he weighed in a whopping 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit for the fight, a failure that detracts from his accomplishment to a good degree. That had to b ..read more

Jaime Munguia was in the right place at the right time when Jermall Charlo fell out as Canelo Alvarez’s expected opponent and the young Mexican, the next best choice, was selected to face his superstar countryman on May 4 in Las Vegas. Munguia’s mission now is to take advantage of what could be a once-in-a-career opportunity. “This is a great opportunity to show the world and show myself who I really am,” he told Boxing Junkie through a translator. “… What I want to show myself is that anything is possible.” Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) had won a 154-pound title and built a gawdy record but hadn’t ..read more

Weekend Review: Ryan Garcia blew away Devin Haney and everyone else
Boxing Junkie

A critical look at the past week in boxing BIGGEST WINNER Ryan Garcia We don’t know whether or to what extent Garcia is off his rocker. He exhibited signs of serious issues in the lead-up to his fight against Devin Haney on Saturday, acting erratically at every turn, but at least some of that might’ve been an act to sell the fight and himself. And the fact he missed weight by 3.2 pounds, which was unprofessional, raised further questions about his mindset. What we DO know now with certainty is that Garcia can fight. Garcia gave one of the most stunning performances in recent years at Barclays ..read more

A good left hook can take a fighter a long way. Even if his skill set is limited. Even if he’s crazy. Ryan Garcia was as good in the ring on Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn as he was whacky leading up to his fight against Devin Haney, putting the 140-pound champ down three times and winning a stunning majority decision in a wild fight. Garcia didn’t win the title because he came in 3.2 pounds over the limit but he made an enormous statement, one that lifted him to the next level of stardom. Ryan Garcia served up one last bit of weirdness. The 140-pound contender, who is scheduled to face Devin Haney on pay-per-view Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, lost the right to fight for Haney’s WBC belt when he came in 3.2 pounds over the division limit Friday morning. Then, at the public (unofficial) weigh-in in the afternoon, he gave professionalism the middle finger by removing his shirt and chugging down what appeared to be a beer on stage. He later said on social media that he drank apple juice combined with sparkling water, not beer, followed by a “HEHE.” 100 Percent worth it ..read more

The drama continues. Ryan Garcia on Friday came in 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit for his pay-per-view fight with titleholder Devin Haney on Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The fight will go on but Garcia will be $1.5 million poorer, as his team has indicated he will honor a bet he made with Haney at Thursday’s final news conference: $500,000 for each pound over the limit. Why would I force my self to make weight so I can be weak Nah I’m here to win That’s it — RYAN GARCIA (@RyanGarcia) April 19, 2024 “Ryan has weighed in over his contractual weight.
