Myanmar is a magical place full of wonder and intrigue.
Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is also somewhat mysterious after decades under the previous dictatorship, but has since opened up and become more accessible for visitors.
Myanmar was a place that I had been aching to visit for at least 15 years, but it was only recently that the stars aligned and I was able to go. I didn’t know much about it except for its history o ..read more

iPhone pano. Not bad for a phone pic, eh?
Mount Ijen was a dramatic introduction to Indonesia’s island of Java, but my volcano experience didn’t end there. After a night trek to the blue fire of Ijen and a quick rest the next day, my new companions and I were off again to the next volcano, Mount Bromo.
I had been dreaming of photographing a Mount Bromo sunrise for over a year before I finally got my cha ..read more

The power of a photo
The very first moment that I knew I wanted to become a professional photographer was when I opened a book with an inspiring photo of a destination. This one photo (I don’t even remember what it was of) was responsible for changing my life. I’d love to thank that photographer if I could!
My point is that photography can inspire us to go places. That’s a big part of this blog for me! When planning my ..read more

Before I went to Indonesia’s famous island of Bali, I had preconceived notions of a popular paradise with unspoiled beaches and lush green hills. That was pretty much it though.
Since having been to Bali, I understand that it’s more complex than beaches and greenery! I had to dig deep, past the pesky touts and partying tourists, and eventually I found the real Bali buried beneath the mass tourism.
Now when I think ..read more

Granite Gear stuff sacks
Every little bit of space counts when it comes to backpacking and I needed that valuable space for my most recent trip to Southeast Asia. I am not one to skimp on the amount of clothes that I bring on a two month backpacking trip, so I needed a way to make all of my clothes fit into my backpack which already had to hold a lot of camera gear and other essentials. The solution that had b ..read more

***Update – many temples are closed :( ***
Before reading the post, please be aware that many temples are no longer accessible to climb. I have not been there in a few years, so I can’t confirm the reasoning, but I’ve heard many rumors. I imagine it has a lot to do with the influx of tourists in recent years, many of whom did not respect the rules (like simply removing shoes) or got injured climbing the ancient temples.

When I arrived in Bali, I didn’t know how long I planned to stay on the island, let alone in the country of Indonesia. Sometimes I like to remain flexible in case I really enjoy a place and want to stay longer. I had high hopes for enjoying Ubud, but I wasn’t so sure about it when I first arrived… First Impressions
My room was in a novel Bali-style family complex, but it was just a little too far away from everything. I ..read more

Cameron Highlands has a lot to offer for a photo hungry traveler like myself. I was very interested in seeing the famous tea plantations that sculpt the landscape around this region in the mountains of Malaysia. What I found did not disappoint.
I first arrived with the intention to do some hikes through some of the rolling green hills, but I was advised not to do so alone for my own safety. Sadly, certain trails are not as s ..read more

If you’ve read my previous post on the natural beauty of Malaysia’s island of Langkawi, it will be no surprise to you that Langkawi wildlife is just as spectacular as the scenery. We had the pleasure of taking two tours with Dev’s Adventure Tours, both of which provided us with plenty of eco-friendly wildlife viewing opportunities and fun, friendly guides.
We first took the Mangrove tour by boat (you can also do kayaking), w ..read more

When I decided that Dave and I should visit Langkawi Island in Malaysia, I didn’t really know what to expect. Until recently, it hasn’t really been on the radar for foreign travelers. I only knew about it after getting a recommendation from fellow travel-blogging friends, Natalie and Rob, of Love and Road.
Fortunately, they had shared a helpful post on what to do in Langkawi, so we had a place to start once we got ..read more
