Harvard Players Win Medals At Pan Ams

One current and three former Harvard Squash players are currently competing at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Amanda Sobhy ’15 (USA) took silver and Marina Stefanoni ’24 (USA) won bronze in the women’s individual event. Meanwhile, Timmy Brownell ’20 (USA) reached the men’s quarterfinals. George Crowne ’22 (Canada) lost in the round of 16 against Brownell. On the doubles side, Brownell won gold in the mixed draw together with Olivia Clyne Blatchford, beating his former Harvard teammate, Crowne, and Nicole Bunyan in the final. Crowne Falls In Pool Trophy Final

11-seed George Crowne’s ’23 Cinderella story at the individual nationals came to an end in the Pool Trophy final today after Trinity’s 4-seed, Mohamed Sharaf, played flawlessly and recorded a 3-0 win, clinching this year’s men’s individual championship. Crowne had upset the seedings by beating Penn’s #1, Drexel’s #1 and Cornell’s #1 before today’s final. But Trinity’s #1 proved to be too strong on the day. After his third upset at this year’s individual nationals, Harvard’s 11-seed George Crowne ’23 is through to tomorrow’s Pool Trophy final. In today’s semifinal, Crowne was down 0-2 against Cornell’s 7-seed Veer Chotrani (who beat Harvard’s Marwan Tarek ’23 in yesterday’s quarterfinal). After winning the third 12-10, Crowne gained momentum and took the rest of the games 11-9, 11-7, playing his best squash of the season at just the right time. While we are celebrating 100 years of Harvard Squash tonight in New York, our players are getting ready for the season’s last event, the individual championships in Philadelphia this weekend. 7 men and 7 women will represent Harvard at the tournament. In the men’s top draw (Pool Trophy), Marwan Tarek ’23 is seeded #2. Tarek was undefeated throughout the regular season and only lost against Cornell’s #1 at men’s team nationals last weekend (after the team match had been decided). Our competitive season will start in November with the annual Ivy Scrimmages at Yale. The teams will have many road trips this year: One to UVA, one to Trinity and the rest of them to the Philadelphia area. In addition to the away matches against Princeton, Penn & Drexel, the teams will head to the Specter Center for both team and individual nationals as well.
