I’m still new to composting so is there anything on this list I can’t compost in a chicken manure bin?

Made a new sifter this weekend and thought I'd share since I was very pleased with the results. I can't act as though this idea was mine. I found it on this sub and it worked out so well I wanted go share it in case others missed it. Rough Price breakdown: 2 - Treated 2x4s = $8 3'×10' Hardware Cloth = $25 Concrete Vibrator Motor = $38 Male adaptor to plug in the motor = $5 I simply screwed the 2x4s together and attached the hardware cloth with a pneumatic stapler, ratchet strapped it to the wheel barrow and plugged it in. I was able to feed it a few shovel fulls of material and move it a ..read more

I just trimmed a giant bush of Salvia Officinalis (common sage). Since the plant has some antiseptic properties, would it kill the beneficial bacteria in the compost? I'm aware it will be composted eventually but I don't want to extend the process as I'm doing Berkeley method. submitted by /u/AnanasAvradanas [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Just sifted my 5 gallon compost and got some BLACK GOLD, any suggestions? It is a tad bit clay like but can i use this already? There is a faint.. faint… faint smell like if something went bad but i mean very faint, it mostly smells earthy. Can i use this compost for my plants already? I tried to get out as much pine straw as possible but I couldn’t get 100% out submitted by /u/CanelaGardening [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey so I read the beginners guide and all that but it didn't solve the answer I was looking for. Unlike many people here I am not composting for the sake of composting. Actually I'm from California and it is a requirement. Something they are going to be enforcing. I have a few things that I would love to get answered to my new lifestyle: I saw this and thought that it would be a good thing to buy. One concern I have for these bins is the smell. It says it doesn't smell at all but I find that hard to believe. I want to see the response here. Does it really not smell? What happens when you lif ..read more

What to do about mold in my compost?

I built my compost box a few years back and have been regularly feeding it kitchen scraps / coffee grounds as well as the occasional bag of grass clippings, and I just harvested some for use for the first time last week. My wife used roughly a 75:25 ratio of potting soil / compost to pot some fruit vines (blueberries, blackberries, etc.) and we noticed some mold start to spread on the surface within a few days. I have a few concerns and no idea how to proceed: 1) Any go-to culprits that may be to blame here? I never added any moldy fruits/etc. to my box. 2) Did I wait too long to harvest ..read more

I'm not sure if this is safe to put in the garden. Should I give it more time to break down? Should I put it back in a pile and heat it up again? I'm in no hurry to use it. Thanks submitted by /u/FrameLittle7164 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
