My sweet composted material was under water in a bucket a little longer. Now it stinks horribly. Is this material still usable for gardening or does the rotting underwater something to it? submitted by /u/theKeyzor [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I just got my compost pile started. Mostly grass clippings, cardboard and leaves. Direct on the ground. It's enclosed on 3 sides with wood, that's all ready rotting. (I heat with a wood stove gobs of wood in my yard). I don't have a thermometer. It smells um earthly when I was turning today. Yesterday it seemed dryer then a popcorn fart. Anything I need to be aware of? submitted by /u/Disastrous-Aspect569 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey everyone, still a bit new to composting. Have my own projects set up and learning a lot but looking for advice here. I want to set up a compost bin for my parents, they have no green collection in their area and it always bothers me throwing organics into the trash. I've sold them on letting me build one, they are aware they need to provide a minimal level of upkeep, just looking for some advice on how to set this up. They want an outdoor bin, ideally one with little upkeep (I told them they would need to turn it once every week or 2). They have a good amount of space so not too conce ..read more

Personally, i think it looks pretty damn close to usable. However, i look online and notice its not really "crumbly" like they say it should be. I dont know the repercussions of using unfinished compost either. All i know is i dont wanna kill my plants and should prolly double check lol submitted by /u/burnnbayb [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is my Bokashi compost not working?

Hello I started Bokashi composting 2 months ago. So basically the pictures are my Bokashi compost I had sealed in the container for the last 2 months. I had expected it to turn a bit more like soil. But maybe I'm wrong. Should I keep it in the container longer? Did I do something wrong? I ended up mixing it with compost I bought from the garden centre in my new bed. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you. submitted by /u/ipissrainbow [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

If it’s steaming should I turn it?

This compost pile next to the birch tree is a mix of dried grass, cardboard, little beaches/twigs and fresh lawn clippings. I mixed well, threw a little fertilizer on top, add some water, and put a tarp on it. When I pulled the tarp back today it was steaming great. My question is if it’s steaming should I just leave it alone or continue to turn it? How often should it be turned? Thank you submitted by /u/Riversmooth [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I have some expired decaf coffee that I grabbed from work as it was about to be thrown away. As it is decaffeinated, do I still need to brew it before adding to the compost, or can i just chuck it in as is? submitted by /u/smelltogetwell [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

First time composter, using a Geobin Over the last couple of days I noticed my compost bin hitting 110 but not increasing beyond that. Is there something I should do - turn / water / or add more greens or browns to get the temperature move upwards submitted by /u/zamzamdip [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
