Simon Heaps broke more new ground by winning three medals at an international para tournament for the first time. Heaps took Men’s Singles silver, plus bronze in both the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles at the Jordan Para Open in Amman. Competing in the Class 4-5 category, Heaps won his two singles group matches 3-0 against Meiirbek Otepov of Kazakhstan and Ibrahim Sabra of Jordan. He then beat Trivendra Singh of India 3-1 (11-2, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6) in the semi-finals and Muntadher Al Sarraji of Iraq 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-7) in the final. Week 31 saw division 2B’s Hutton Harriers and division 2C’s Chelmsford Panthers take the first two of four junior divisional titles on offer. Chelmsford Junior League division 2A The Hutton Hawks moved within touching distance of the division 2A title with a 4-1 home win over the Chelmsford Cougars. Charlie Ware was in dominating form as he won both of his matches 3-0 – dropping just 24 points over the six games. Rorke is Island hardbat champion

The Isle of Wight Association organises an annual hardbat tournament, which can be quite difficult to adjust to but is always great fun. This year, Island’s Hardbat event took place at the T. Tennis Centre at Smallbrook and 23 people took part. The Singles event was won by one of the Island’s top players, Alex Rorke. In the final he beat Ryan Cates, a 17-year-old with great potential. In the Doubles, Ryan partnered Peter Clarke and they managed to beat Glenn Morley & Nicky Dando. Green and Yu take top honours at Junior National Cup

Top seeds Connor Green and Tianer Yu duly took the gold medals at the Junior National Cup held at BATTS TTC in Harlow. The event sees the top 10 players in the rankings play on a round-robin basis over the weekend to decide the medallists. The champions are pictured above with Table Tennis England President Jill Parker MBE and Director Don Parker. Girls Top seed Tianer Yu had an almost perfect record as she won the girls’ event, conceding only two games on the way. Kacper Piwowar and Abraham Sellado reached the knockout stage in two age groups at the WTT Youth Contender Luxembourg. Both went through with one victory out of two in the older under-17 group stage, before bowing out to higher-ranked players in the round of 64 – Sellado (WR 326) to Noah Vitel of France (WR 169) and Piwowar (WR 301) to world No 63 junior Julian Rzihauschek of Austria. A programme from the inaugural 1926 World Championships in London, a bronze medal won by England at the 1939 Worlds in Cairo and mementos of England’s Swaythling Cup victory in 1953 were among artefacts on display at the Mark Bates Ltd National Championships recently. England is of course hosting the centenary World Team Championships at the OVO Arena, Wembley, in 2026. Paralympic champion Will Bayley and rising star Bly Twomey journeyed to the birthplace of the Paralympics when they caught up with a Brighton TTC club-mate at the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC).
