At Aulexic, we love books. We love reading. And we love sharing stories with others. We are strong advocates for providing emergent readers with a solid foundation in the love of story, because we feel from that comes the ability for anyone to learn to read for themselves. Children are born with innate curiosity and an instinct for play. Making books a part of that in their developmental years lays the foundation for their success as readers. So many parents and teachers expect children to pick up books and learn to read but don’t necessarily start with a foundation that begins long before a c ..read more

The Amazing Brother That Inspired My TEDx Talk

My brother was one in a million. Literally. Many of those who watched my TEDx Talk wanted to know more about my brother so I thought I’d write a little more about him here. My brother, Gaelon, was born with Xeroderma pigmentosum (or XP for short). It’s a very rare skin condition that basically means the skin cannot protect or heal itself from exposure to ultraviolet light. While XP is still considered a terminal condition, many people diagnosed with it today can expect to live twenty or thirty years, some even longer, because we’ve gotten much better at finding ways to protect people from expo ..read more

We are in amazing times, the likes of which have never seen before with the global environment changing month-to-month, almost day-by-day. From bushfires to droughts to pandemics. It has brought out the best in us, highlighted the worst, showcased skills, brought friendships, developed understanding. Our takeaway has to be that, within our lives, whether we went through positive or negative, ups or downs we have proven to ourselves beyond a shadow of a doubt that we have the ability to adapt and change to suit the environment, to suit the day, the job, the surroundings. This is what TEDxMand ..read more

This one-hour talk unlocks that key to the core elements of story structure. Rebecca Laffar-Smith shares an inside look at what makes the stories we love, compelling and universal. “When I was in primary school my teacher told me that all stories have a beginning, middle, and ending. All stories are made up of these three basic parts. It’s really quite simple. Of course, it’s really not simple at all because it doesn’t tell us where stories begin, what happens in the middle, and how they come together to produce a satisfying ending.” – Rebecca Laffar-Smith Discover how to define your story con ..read more

We’re so thrilled to see Aulexic feature on the front page of our local Examiner newspaper this week but I wanted to share the rest of the interview I had with the wonderful Juanita Shepherd because a newspaper can only cover a tiny snippet of the great conversation we had. I love talking about Aulexic, the books we’re creating, and our hopes for the future and would love to respond to reader questions so if you have any you’d like to ask, please share them in the comments or send me an email at admin@aulexic.com.au. 1. Can you please tell me about Aulexic? When was it founded? What inspired ..read more

“I just think that people are going all in on fixing what they are bad at instead of going all in on extenuating what they’re great at.” Multi-millionaire business builder, Gary Vaynerchuk Photo courtesy of ©iStockphoto.com/RichVintage Gary Vaynerchuk wasn’t good at school. He didn’t read well and his teachers told him he’d go nowhere in life. Strangely, this disdain prompted an amazing push-back response, an “I’ll show them!” kind of attitude. But, instead of obsessing over the things he didn’t do well, Gary spent all his time focusing on the things he was great at. He worked at connecti ..read more

Nadia L King was born in Dublin, Ireland in the 1970s. She was a tiny baby with a rather loud voice. Nadia loved to scribble in her parents’ books and took a long time to learn to read. Once she got started, she didn’t stop. She reads voraciously and enthusiastically. She is an overexcited person who adores words and struggles with grammar. She inhales books the same way her Labrador inhales her dog biscuits. Nadia took a long time to write, life just seemed to have other plans. Now she writes every day. Her first short story ‘Disappointment’ was published in the US. She has a background in j ..read more

The Value of Labels: ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, and Other Diagnoses
Aulexic Blog
by Shari Malowitz

Labels like adhd, dyslexia, autism, and other diagnoses, indicate a difference, not a defect, and having the label empowers us to know more about ourselves. They help us learn more about the weaknesses that cause us difficulties, the associated strengths we might have, and the ways we can work within our abilities to achieve all we want to achieve. They also help us find and identify others who face similar challenges so that we can connect with and learn from each other. When I was a child,  it took a tremendous amount of time and energy to learn things that took most people less t ..read more
