The PRO Kayak Blog
by Eric Tebbets

Originally known as the Cambria Slam Down tournament, for the past couple of years it has been called the Central Coast Slam Down or simply, the Slam Down. The Slam Down was not the first kayak tournament in California but it is the one of the original kayak fishing tournaments on California’s Central Coast and remains one of the State's premier events. On Saturday September 16, the 6th Annual tournament took place in benefit of the Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center. Myself along with most of the ProKayakFishingTeam again geared up to compete against some of the best saltwater kayak an ..read more

Taking the Jackson Kayak Journey 14 Out For a Test Spin
The PRO Kayak Blog

My kayaking passion is ocean rock gardening (ducking in and out of the rocks and waves). So for me the true test for a kayak is how does it handle dynamic water in close with the rocks. Swell was 4.5 feet at 18 seconds today so it made for some challenging conditions, some waves 6-7 feet, perfect for putting the Jackson Kayak Journey to the test. At 14 feet and 24.5 inches wide the Journey is a short sea kayak, but it tracks very well and has enough speed to keep up with your friends. It can also hold enough gear for a multi day paddle trip. At 6’3", 195 pounds the high quality outfitting fit ..read more

Kayak fishing has blown up into a huge market and all the kayak companies see its potential. In my mind one of the most important pieces of equipment for kayak fishing is...the kayak. Otherwise, you're just fishing. When it comes to kayaks it's apples and oranges, everyone has their opinions and preferences. What it comes down to is, are you looking for a wider, more stable platform or a sleeker, faster one that tracks better in the water. Let's start off with the wider, more stable kayaks. There are a lot of guys out there that are going over to the more stable boat for bass fishing. One of ..read more

Invaluable Skills for All Kayak Anglers
The PRO Kayak Blog
by Andy O'Brien

Like many kayak anglers, when I got started in this sport I was an angler first and foremost. I did not give much thought to the kayaking aspect. But, after some unplanned swims, difficult attempts at getting back on my boat in deep water, and a couple of embarrassing yard sales at the beach, I soon realized that learning and honing the skills to be a proficient paddler were as important as honing my fishing skills. Recently, I had the good fortune to attend a class about self-rescue, rescue and recovery of others, and towing techniques. The training was led by Tom Reilly ..read more
