For context, I'm a computer science major, not music, so I don't know jack shit about music theory.
Im a current freshman in college and my university has a few opportunities to play jazz with others, one being in combos and the other being the large ensemble. Im currently playing in combos and I want to audition for the big band, but the director asked another pianist in my group about joining the big band next year, skipping the audition since the director feels that he's already proven his piano skills. That kind of makes me upset since I also acknowledge how much less experienced I am com ..read more

Jazz vocal also works. I would prefer anything from before 1965 (though I'm open to anything). Here are some examples of albums I'm looking for:
Miles Davis - Ascenseur pour l'échafaud
Bill Evans Trio - Moon Beams
Kenny Dorham - Quiet Kenny
Sarah Vaughan - After Hours
Bill Evans - Coffee & Cigarettes
Chet Baker - Chet Baker Sings
Bohren & Der Club of Gore - Sunset Mission
Kenny Drew - Kenny Drew & His Progressive Piano

Are there any books, video courses, etc. that you would recommend for learning about chord melody? Not specifically jazz. Just guitar chord melody, or chord melody more generally.
Thanks!

Which albums featuring Thelonious Monk would you recommend? I haven't quite connected with Monk's music yet, despite hearing many jazz pianists praise him as a major influence. I'm genuinely curious to understand what makes Monk so special. Can you help me appreciate his music better? Thanks in advance for any recommendations or insights!

Hello guys,
Im a jazz pianist in NY and making around 40k a year
Everytime i go to a bar, party or any social setting, i try my best to not tell others what I do. Everytime i tell women that I'm jazzcat they start hitting on me.
Last week i went to the bar with my friends and i told his sister i was a jazzcat. She kept asking me can you play one of oscar peterson's solo in C Jam blues and perform at her birthday party.
This is a reoccuring problem. It's getting so bad to the point where i start telling women im a bass player so they will stop hitting me all the time.
Any advice on how to stop ..read more
