Making judo more spectator friendly

I got injured recently so I started binge watching JudoTV - the matches of the top 10-20 players in most weight classes. It was… bad. Despite the IJF’s attempts since the Olympic removal scare of 2012 to increase viewership (including banning leg grabs) judo remains an incredibly painful sport to watch. A lot of matches see constant, sometimes minutes-long delays from coaches contesting decisions and forcing refs to review footage. Others are constantly delayed when one player gets tired and takes his time putting his gi back together. These are both simple, though not easy, fixes. Removing t ..read more

So I train at the gym that is in my apartment. The gym does not have a squat rack. It has dumbbells, cable station, Smith machine, free bar and some plates. My upper body session have been great so far and have given me good results. But I'm struggling with lower body which is the most important in Judo. As my primary strength movement I used dumbbell front squats (dumbbells held above my shoulders). However it doesn't allow me to effectively load my legs. Can you suggest exercises for me that I can do to build strength in my legs... submitted by /u/Inside_Proposal_6329 [visit reddit] [comme ..read more

Private classes for grading?

Just checking if there is any Dojo etiquette around private lessons with a sensei. I completely understand the need for 1-on-1 training and coaching for competition development etc. however I have recently noticed that in some training centres, judoka will do 1-on-1 training with the sensei to learn the grading syllabus - like for yellow, orange, and green belt. My personal feeling is that this stuff should be learnt in normal class. Is there any general etiquette around this? Like is it OK for someone to pay a sensei to learn like a Koshi Guruma for their upcoming grading date for the yellow ..read more

What do you think? No issue with this necessarily being the case, but just wondering what everyone else thinks. Wife made an interesting observation based on what she sees on social media. I think she may be onto something. submitted by /u/shinyming [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
